Caregiver's CornerFeatured NewsHome Care

What Does It Mean To Be A Caregiver?

Do you take your elderly mother or grandmother food shopping? Do you refill your grandfather’s prescriptions? Do you make doctor’s appointments for your great aunt? If you do any of these things on a regular, routine basis, you may be considered a “Caregiver”.

A caregiver is a family member or close friend that decides to take care of a senior in need, while also maintaining their own personal and work lives. Most people do not know that they fit the “caregiver” role, and so they are not properly trained or educated on all of the tasks that they are required to do as a caregiver. Most caregiver’s also do not know that they can be paid to help their loved ones, which can create extra income for them.

As the caregiver for a senior family member, you can be paid through the CDPAP program.  Call New York for Seniors at (877) 255-7017 to be connected to one of our home care partners that participates in the CDPAP program.

Help Your Loved One Fight The Flu This Winter With A Plant Based Diet!

Flu season is amongst us, and the best way to fight the flu or prevent it all together is by making sure your loved one is eating enough fresh produce!

According to onegreenplanet.org, “Overall, as research has shown, most vegans and vegetarians are healthier than meat eaters. But to keep colds at bay, you must follow a healthy lifestyle (including sleeping enough, exercising, not smoking, learning to cope with stress) and a healthy, varied diet, which means eating more than pasta and bread every day.”

So, incorporate more greens and fruits and replace meats and carbohydrates this Winter season to ensure optimal health!

Check Out This Healthy, Vegan and Gluten Free Alternative To Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Winter is the season of baking at grandma’s house, so why not try this delicious, easy, healthy version of the beloved chocolate chip cookie?! This recipe is not only easy, but it is vegan and gluten-free.

Check below for the recipe!

PERFECT VEGAN GLUTEN-FREE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
Perfect vegan chocolate chip cookies made with simple methods and 9 ingredients. Tender, sweet, studded with chocolate, and undetectably gluten-free.

Ingredients
US Customary – Metric
1 1/4 cup almond flour (almond flour works best here as opposed to almond meal, which would give these more crunchy texture and nutty flavor // if avoiding nuts, see notes*)
1/4 cup vegan dark chocolate chips (we like Enjoy Life)
1/3 cup gluten-free flour blend
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/3 cup organic brown sugar (or sub muscovado sugar)
1/4 cup aquafaba (the brine/liquid in a can of chickpeas)
3 Tbsp coconut oil (melted)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, stir together almond flour, dark chocolate chips, gluten-free flour, baking powder, salt, and organic brown sugar. Set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl, beat aquafaba using a handheld mixer until light and fluffy and loose peaks have formed. (Add a little cream of tartar to help them along if not whipping.)

To the aquafaba, add the melted coconut oil and vanilla and beat or whisk to combine. Then add to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. You should have a firm, semi-tacky dough.

Loosely cover and let chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. In the meantime, preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Scoop out 1 1/2-Tablespoon amounts of dough (I like this scoop) and transfer to your lined baking sheet. Use the palm of your hand to smash the cookies down slightly into small mounds. They won’t spread much, so no need to leave a ton of room between cookies. There should be about 11 cookies (amount as original recipe is written // expect a different yield if altering batch size).
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Be careful not to burn (especially on the bottoms).
Remove from oven and let cool on the pan for 5 minutes. Then carefully loosen with a spatula and enjoy or continue to let cool.

Store cooled leftovers in a sealed container at room temperature up to 4 days or 1 month in the freezer. These are super delicious when warm and dipped in almond milk or hot cocoa!

Share This Healthy Vegan Chili Recipe With Your Loved One This Winter!

Winter is officially here! While we’re all gearing up for the snow and extremely cold weather, it’s really easy for us to stay indoors and eat unhealthy comfort food. Instead of eating chili with meat in it, try making this extremely healthy vegan chili! It’s delicious and still gives you the “comfort” food satisfaction that we all enjoy.

Check out the recipe provided by epicurious.com below!

YIELD Serves 6 to 8

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon sunflower oil
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 cup shredded carrots
1-2 jalapeño peppers, stemmed, seeded, and minced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup bulgur, rinsed
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
2 cups diced fresh tomatoes (about 2 medium or 6 plum tomatoes)
1 1/2 cups tomato sauce
1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 1/2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, drained and rinsed
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, or to taste
Chopped fresh cilantro

PREPARATION:

1. Heat the oil in a Dutch oven or large heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion, carrots, and jalapeño and sauté, stirring often, until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the bulgur, chili powder, and cumin and stir until well combined.
2. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beans. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the beans are tender, about 1 hour. Season with salt to taste. Serve with a sprinkling of cilantro, if desired.

Health & Wellness Organizations Can Now Post Their Events on the HealthyNYC Events Calendar

JIG Media, owners of the HealthyNYC initiative, announced the launch of the HealthyNYC Events Calendar. Health and wellness organizations can submit their health and wellness events for inclusion on the HealthyNYC Events Calendar.

This service is free!

“The reason we launched the HealthyNYC.com Events Calendar, is based on the need of New Yorkers to stay informed about the activities that are available throughout New York City”, stated Vernon Jones Sr., CEO of JIG Media. “In these uncertain times in the healthcare industry it is more important than ever for people to stay healthy. Staying healthy includes exercising, eating well and taking advantage of information and resources that are at your fingertips. There are hundreds of events taking place throughout New York City, and we want HealthyNYC.com to be the destination where event organizers can freely post their events, and New Yorkers can easily gain access to information about the events.  Events include health fairs, seminars, fitness sessions, healthy eating, mental health awareness, and everything in between.”

HealthyNYC.com, which is dedicated 100% to the health and well being of New Yorkers, was created to improve the Population Health for New York City.  This is done through daily healthy living content, as well as through events like the HealthyNYC Expo and the New York for Seniors Wellness & Resource Series.

The event submission process is extremely simple, and takes just a few minutes to post each event. There is no cost to post events, however JIG Media does provide a complete marketing service to promote your health events, digitally (eblasts, social media), and through the New York for Seniors print magazine.

You can start posting your events for free on the Events Submission Page.

Woman’s Life Saved In Brooklyn As The Trauma Team at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn Makes Every Second Count

pictured: The trauma surgery team at NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn. From left: Galina A. Glinik, MD, interim trauma medical director, with attending trauma surgeons Nicole D. Goulet, MD; Pieter Smit, MD; Helen Davido, MD; Onaona U. Gurney, MD; and Patricia Ayoung-Chee, MD, MPH.

On an early morning last December, a van making a turn onto the BQE struck a female pedestrian at a crosswalk, dragging her 30 feet before coming to a stop. The 911 dispatcher alerted the closest Level I hospital – the trauma team at NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn. They responded immediately to save her life.

Every second counts for patients suffering life-threatening injuries, and the trauma unit at NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn provides 24-hour coverage to meet that urgent need.  Accredited by the American College of Surgeons, it is one of the few in the borough certified to handle the most severe injuries.

Galina Glinik, MD, a former medical worker in the Soviet-Afghan war, serves as the program’s interim director, and leads a team of physicians specializing in critical care and trauma surgery: Patricia R. “It’s vitally important to be able to rapidly assign priorities and determine the resources and personnel needed,” Glinik says. “There are many things happening simultaneously to save a patient’s life during a trauma call.”

As the Level I alert was broadcast that December morning, 15 to 20 additional specialists responded with the trauma team to the Emergency Department. The patient arrived awake, agitated, and in a state of distress with internal bleeding. The team worked quickly to stabilize and assess her injuries.

“Responding to trauma can be exhilarating, particularly when we can stabilize quickly so that other life-saving procedures can be started,” says Glinik. “The young woman suffered multiple internal injuries, including collapsed lungs and many broken bones. We were not sure if she would survive.”

Thomas Lyon, MD, chief of orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, who completed a fellowship at R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, one of the country’s top trauma facilities, worked with the team to repair the patient’s multiple fractures. “Her breathing and other medical conditions had to be addressed before the most serious orthopedic injury—a broken pelvis—could be secured,” he says.

The patient survived, and even visited the hospital months after the accident to personally thank the team that saved her.

$1.2 Bil Affordable Housing Development in East New York Planned by Christian Cultural Center

According to an article in the Christian Post, pastor A.R. Bernard made the announcement at the 100 Cities Summit, in Washington DC.

Speaking to Christian leaders from over 45 countries at the 100 Cities Summit hosted by Movement Day at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., Bernard told the crowd that the Christian Cultural Center will partner with various government and private entities to build a community of 2,100 mixed-income housing units.

The community, which Bernard expects to be finished within the next seven to 10 years, will also include an education center, retail space, and a performing arts center.

“We are a 50/50 partner with the developer — not land that [the church] sold or gave up,” Bernard explained.  “In New York, it is not just land but air rights that is worth millions of dollars. We are in it together to reap all that comes out of that development and to address gentrification issues that are happening in the communities there in New York City.”

Bernard elaborated on the project in an interview with The Christian Post.

“In cities like New York, there is gentrification taking place. Gentrification could be racial, it could be economic. For us it is economic. Individuals who are working class or in a certain income range are being squeezed out,” he stressed.  “We wanted to respond by creating affordable housing. We didn’t want to do what has typically been done over the last 70, 80 years in America and that is warehousing people with one income, which perpetuates poverty and perpetuates inner city condition.”

“What we want to do is create a community and a model that is sustainable,” he added.  “It is creating community and we want to do it in such a way that is sustainable long-term and a model that we can replicate in other cities across the country.”

Weekly Health Tip: BeetRoot Can Lower High Blood Pressure and Prevent Heart Disease

New York City is a high pressure city, where people can sometimes neglect their health.  One of these health issues that can be a quiet killer, is high blood pressure.

According to WebMd, high blood pressure or hypertension increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Hypertension risk factors include obesity, drinking too much alcohol, smoking, and family history. Beta-blockers are a common treatment for hypertension.

High blood pressure can lead to heart ailments, including thickening of the heart, and heart failure.

Nitric oxide is a very strong chemical that causes your blood vessels to relax, which improves blood flow to your organs, muscles, and — most importantly — your heart. Without this chemical, your ability to exercise can be markedly reduced and you may have symptoms of a stiff heart, such as shortness of breath and fatigue.

Beet juice may boost stamina to help you exercise longer, improve bloodflow, and help lower blood pressure, some research shows.

Why? Beets are rich in natural chemicals called nitrates. Through a chain reaction, your body changes nitrates into nitric oxide, which helps with blood flow and blood pressure.

Beet Juice Benefits

In some studies, drinking about 2 cups of beet juice daily or taking nitrate capsules lowered blood pressure in healthy adults.

Beet juice may also help your stamina when you exercise. In one study, people who drank beet juice for 6 days had better stamina during intense exercise.

Beet Juice Nutrition

One cup of raw beets has 58 calories and 13 grams of carbohydrates. A cup of beet juice is usually around 100 calories and 25 grams of carbohydrates, because of the way it is processed.

Beets are good sources of folate, potassiumvitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, as well as nitrates.

Live Well Pharmacy Provides Education Session for Seniors on Diabetes Day at Canarsie Adult Day Center

November 14 was World Diabetes Day, and the staff at Live Well Pharmacy, in Brooklyn, came out to the Canarsie Adult Day Center to educate seniors on ways to fight diabetes.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness in response to rising diabetes rates worldwide, and it was made an official United Nations holiday in 2006. It’s recognized on November 14 because that’s the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.

Here are 7 tips to reduce the risk of diabetes.

  1. Lose excess body fat. Being overweight is a big risk factor for diabetes. …
  2. Follow a plant-based, low-calorie diet. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables—a dietary pattern studies show reduces diabetes risk
  3. Drink water
  4. Move your body
  5. Stress less
  6. Sleep well
  7. Keep medical appointments.
