Avoid High Cholesterol By Cooking Healthy for the Holidays

Having high cholesterol can be an immediate danger to seniors. According to Mayoclinic.com, “Cholesterol is a waxy substance that’s found in the fats (lipids) in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease.”

There are no symptoms of having high cholesterol, and it is more present in seniors than any other age group. During the holiday season, traditional food is made for families, often by the seniors themselves. To reduce the risk of heart disease or heart failure, seniors should consider altering family recipes to make them more health positive.

It is very important that while choosing the ingredients for family recipes, ingredients should not contain the following:

-saturated fats
-trans fats
-little to no alcohol

Reduce your usage of butter and margarine, cut back on the excess sugar, and make sure to drink as little as possible this holiday season. Your body will thank you for it!

Who is Eligible for Medicare in New York City?

Courtesy HHS.gov

Generally, Medicare is available for people age 65 or older, younger people with disabilities and people with End Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant). Medicare has two parts, Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medicare Insurance). You are eligible for premium-free Part A if you are age 65 or older and you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. You can get Part A at age 65 without having to pay premiums if:

  • You are receiving retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.
  • You are eligible to receive Social Security or Railroad benefits but you have not yet filed for them.
  • You or your spouse had Medicare-covered government employment.

If you (or your spouse) did not pay Medicare taxes while you worked, and you are age 65 or older and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, you may be able to buy Part A. If you are under age 65, you can get Part A without having to pay premiums if:

  • You have been entitled to Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for 24 months. (Note: If you have Lou Gehrig’s disease, your Medicare benefits begin the first month you get disability benefits.)
  • You are a kidney dialysis or kidney transplant patient.

While most people do not have to pay a premium for Part A, everyone must pay for Part B if they want it. This monthly premium is deducted from your Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Civil Service Retirement check. If you do not get any of these payments, Medicare sends you a bill for your Part B premium every 3 months.

If you have a specific question about Medicare you can contact New York for Seniors at 877-255-7027. We will connect you with one of our Medicare partners, to explain the process.

Healthy Tip Of The Week: How To Prevent Dementia In Seniors

Having dementia could be a drastic and devastating change for seniors. Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life, with memory loss as an example (according to www.alz.org). Thankfully, if your loved one does not show any signs of having dementia, you can make sure that he/she never develops this mental change with small improvements to their lifestyle.

In order to prevent dementia from happening, here are a couple of things that you can do:
-Do not smoke.
-Keep blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar levels within recommended limits.
-Eat a healthy, balanced diet.
-Exercise.
-Maintain a healthy weight.
-Limit alcohol consumption.

As far as diet goes, you can:
-Eat lots of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
-Use herbs as a flavoring rather than salt.
-Eat nuts, olive oil, and other healthy fats instead of butter or other saturated fats.

Dementia does not have to occur in your loved ones lives. Make sure to make these adjustments to their diet/lifestyle to prevent dementia from occurring.

‘New York for Seniors’ Announces Expanded Events Plan for 2019 Health and Wellness Series

New York for Seniors, a senior-focused initiative, which produces the New York for Seniors Wellness and Resource series of events, as well as co-producing the HealthyNYC Expo series, has announced their expansion plans for 2019.

“We feel really good about our initiatives that have proven to be successful thus far, and we want to expand the opportunities to help seniors in New York City to become more active”, stated Wayne Jordan, SVP of New York for Seniors. “Our NewYorkforSeniors.com website and social media channels have seen a 145% increase in engagement over the past year, which tells us that seniors and caregivers are following us online to find out about our events, and to become more educated about home care, health care, and other issues that impact their lives.”

With over 1.2 million seniors, over the age of 65, living in New York City, it is more important than ever to provide more activities through events, as well as providing information on digital platforms like nyforseniors.com. Over 70% of seniors are actively online, and that number is growing everyday.

“We are excited about the expansion of our events for 2019”, stated Vernon Jones, Sr, CEO of JIG Media, the founders of the New York for Seniors and HealthyNYC initiatives. “We receive calls everyday from seniors and caregivers, asking us when is our next event. We ae adding at least 10 events for 2019 because of the need.  Our events are not setup to sell seniors on anything.  We provide information and our partners are there to provide resources and to educate seniors and caregivers on health care options, home care options, and to answer questions about resources that are available to seniors and caregivers.  We also provide free refreshments, live entertainment, important workshops, games and giveaways. Most importantly this is an opportunity for seniors to stay engaged and active.  It’s a win-win all the way around.  Our partners are important, and their support shows that they truly care about the seniors.”

Some event partners at recent New York for Seniors and HealthyNYC events included Fidelis Care, Anthem, Tradition Home Care, Caring Professionals, Department of Aging, Spring Creek Senior Partners, Kings County Hospital, MetroPlus, and many more.

For 2019, the New York for Seniors team will produce multiple events in all boroughs of New York City, and they are looking at the possibility of launching events in Westchester, New Rochelle and Long Island. Events in Brownsville, East New York, Governor’s Island, and Bronx will remain on the list as well.

Aging-focused companies, agencies and non-profits are encouraged to contact New York for Seniors to partner with New York for Seniors for 2019, as a sponsor, vendor, or community partner.

To become an event partner, or for further information you can call New York for Seniors at 877-255-7017 or email [email protected]

Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) This Fall/Winter With Fun Senior Activities!

This fall/winter, don’t let your senior fall into Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), an emotional switch and slight depression that occurs a little after Daylight Savings Time. The cause of this emotional change is unknown, but there are ways that you can prevent it from getting worse of happening all together!

If you have a loved one that is home-bound majority of the time, make sure to spend time with her and bring over relatives (especially grandkids!) to make her laugh, share meals, and to make her feel like every day is an interesting day in general.

If you are a home health aide or a care-taker, help your senior prepare for the holidays, or take your senior for a walk! Making him feel included will make him feel extremely happy!

If your senior can get around, and doesn’t mind socializing with other seniors, you can always bring them to the Canarsie Adult Center, where there are multiple activities that happen Monday-Friday, every week! On Fridays, the center has a party that all the seniors get to enjoy, complete with snacks and a DJ!

This season, keep your seniors in mind and included with as many family and friend activities/gatherings as possible. Seasonal depression can be beat with a little extra love and care!

New Yorkers Are Invited To A Series of Medicare Open Enrollment Seminars Hosted by NYC Health + Hospitals

Leading up to the open-enrollment periods for Medicare and New York State of Health, the State’s official online marketplace, NYC Health + Hospitals and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are collaborating to help community partners, faith-based organizations, caregivers, and community members understand health insurance options available to them.

Health insurance specialists from CMS will provide updates on Medicaid and Medicare (Parts A,B,C and D), as well as information on initiatives underway toward improving the health care system, and how to select and purchase affordable insurance on New York State of Health. CMS will also provide details about what to expect as new Medicare cards are issued in 2018, including tips about protecting against fraud and abuse. This is the sixth consecutive year NYC Health + Hospitals and CMS are partnering to bring free seminars to communities across New York City.

The seminars are open to the public and will be held at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull (Brooklyn), NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island (Brooklyn), NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi (Bronx), and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan (Manhattan). Community partners, faith-based organizations, caregivers, community members, and NYC Health + Hospitals’ staff nearing age 65, are all encouraged to attend.

Outreach specialists from GetCoveredNYC, the City of New York’s health insurance enrollment program, will also be present to help attendees understand their coverage options and begin their enrollment.

“Choosing the insurance that is most right for you and your family can be challenging. It’s not surprising that people have questions,” said Mitchell Katz, MD, president and chief executive officer, NYC Health + Hospitals. “Having an understanding of the different insurance options is empowering, so I encourage New Yorkers to take advantage of this free information.”

With the exception of people with Medicare, the next open enrollment period for New York State of Health, when residents will be able to either change their insurance plan, or enroll in health insurance for the first time, will start on November 1, 2018. For people with Medicare, the annual enrollment period began as of October 15, 2018, and ends December 7, 2018. During this time, people with Medicare can select a Medicare Advantage plan or prescription drug plan. They can also switch plans if they are already enrolled.

Topics of information at the public seminars include:

  • The benefits of Medicare and how to apply
  • The parts of Medicare – Part A: hospital insurance; Part B: medical insurance (outpatient visits, lab work, preventive services); Part C: health plans; and Part D: prescription drug coverage
  • The Medicare appeals process
  • The Medicare programs in place for people with limited income and resources
  • The new Medicare card
  • Medicaid basics
  • Updates on New York State of Health
  • Enrollment resources and assistance for the uninsured provided by GetCoveredNYC
  • Health in their neighborhood

“With open-enrollment fast approaching, training our community partners and community members about Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance is as important as it has ever been,” said Frank Winter, partnership manager, CMS New York Regional External Affairs Office. “Patients have so many options regarding what coverage to select and how to access the health care system, it is important that we provide good information to them, the health insurance counselors who assist them, and the caregivers who look out for them, to make sure they are getting the services they need to stay healthy and enjoy a good quality of life.”

Registration is free and required in advance of the event. Light refreshments will be served, and attendees will have the chance to win a fitness tracker. Participants may also register by calling: 212-788-3450.

Northeastern Towers Annex Senior Affordable Housing Coming to Jamaica Queens

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) joined the Northeastern Conference of Seventh Day Adventists (NEC), Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), and Mega Contracting to break ground today on Northeastern Towers Annex, a joint venture development in Jamaica, Queens. This new 10-story building will create 159 affordable apartments for very low-income seniors aged 62 years and up. This project is being financed through HPD’s Senior Affordable Rental Apartments (SARA) Program and HDC’s Extremely Low and Low-Income (ELLA) Program.

“Through Housing New York 2.0, we committed to put seniors first while working on every front to unlock underused lots and put them to use as affordable housing. Working with non-profit, faith-based, and private partners, this innovative development will pair 159 new affordable apartments for seniors with on-site social services,” said HPD Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer. “I want to thank our partners at NEC, FAC, HDC, and all our dedicated partners for working with us to make sure that quality, affordable housing is within everyone’s reach.”

“With Northeastern Towers Annex, we are delivering on the promise of Housing New York to provide greater stability to our city’s most vulnerable seniors through the creation of deeply affordable housing,” said HDC President Eric Enderlin. “This project represents the power of public-private partnership, and I’d like to express my appreciation for the collective creativity and hard work of all involved.”

This unique project, adjacent to an existing senior low-income apartment building on Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, will include 58 studios, 100 one-bedroom apartments, and 1 two-bedroom superintendent’s apartment. A portion of the apartments will be set aside for seniors with mobility, visual, and hearing impairments, and a portion of the apartments will be reserved for formerly homeless households. Addressing the needs of seniors on fixed or very low incomes, the building will be 100% affordable for low- and very-low income residents while also offering on-site social services provided The Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC).

“This is an important day and a major step in addressing the urgent need for affordable housing in Jamaica,” says Council Member Adrienne Adams (D-Jamaica). “Northeastern Towers Annex is an exciting development that will meet many goals as we address the affordable housing crisis and residential needs of older New Yorkers. I look forward to this exciting example of progress in our borough and creating affordable units for vulnerable populations of various incomes.”

“The need for affordable housing – especially for seniors – in Queens and New York City has never been greater. The development of 159 more new affordable units of housing specifically for seniors on fixed- or very low-incomes is a most welcome addition to Jamaica. Thanks to this unique joint partnership, the new homes and amenities will help support our elders to age gracefully with dignity, and to remain active and engaged in our communities,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.

In addition to Northeastern Towers Annex’s affordable apartments, the site will include several on-site amenities specifically designed for its senior residents. On-site features will include: a community room, a media room, an exercise and wellness center, social service and office suites, warming pantry and storage, laundry and television lounges on every floor, a library and club room, a rooftop with terrace and separate rooftop garden area, a personal care room, and 90 parking spaces reserved for residents.

“The Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists is proud to stand with our neighbors to insure that senior citizens, who have given so much to our community, enjoy safe, clean and affordable housing in their sunset years,” says Dr. Daniel Honore, President of the Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

“Fifth Avenue Committee is thrilled to break ground on Northeastern Towers Annex –  our first project in Queens and our first affordable housing exclusively for seniors.  This project has been a true partnership with the Northeastern Conference of Seventh Day Adventists from inception, and FAC is very excited to be working with our long-time partner Mega,” says Michelle de la Uz, Executive Director of Fifth Avenue Committee. “We thank the local elected officials, the City of New York and Wells Fargo for their financial support and investment, and we’re enthusiastic about bringing much needed affordable, senior housing to Jamaica and helping seniors to remain in the community and borough they love.”

The project was financed through $90.6 million in public and private investment. NYC Housing Development Corporation provided more than $50 million in tax-exempt bonds and an additional $8.7 million in corporate reserves. NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development provided more than $13 million in local subsidy. In addition, the project benefits from Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) that generated more than $37 million in tax credit equity from investors through Wells Fargo, who also provided the letter of credit.Queens Borough President Melinda Katz provided $1,000,000 in discretionary capital funding from the City of New York.

“Wells Fargo would like to congratulate everyone at Fifth Avenue Committee, NEC, Mega Contracting, HPD, HDC and HUD on this vital project.  When complete, the building will provide 159 apartments and on-site services to low income and formerly homeless seniors who are so deserving of a beautiful new building to call home,” says Page Travelstead, Senior Vice President at Wells Fargo Bank. “Our goal at Wells Fargo is to support long-term economic growth and improve the quality of life for the communities that we serve.  We are so grateful that through our involvement in the NE Towers Annex project, we can play a small role in creating a vibrant seniors community in this Jamaica neighborhood.  On a more personal note, as a former FAC project manager, I am thrilled to be a financing partner on this project and see all the great work that FAC continues to do throughout Brooklyn and now Queens!”

Northeastern Towers Annex is expected to be completed in September 2020.

What is Medicare A, B, C, and D? Defined for New York’s Seniors

What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).

The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Part B covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)

A type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, most Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren’t paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)

Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer prescription drug coverage that follows the same rules as Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.

Join New York for Seniors for constant updates on health care, health fairs, senior discounts, and more.

A Vision Realized: Healthy NYC Expo on Governors Island

On Saturday, September 29th, JIG Media & Mastermind Connect‘s vision of bringing New Yorkers together for the purpose of creating a healthier city was realized. The Healthy NYC Expo on Governors Island powered by Fidelis Care hosted dozens of activities for the entire family, over 50 community partners, live DJ’s and tons of giveaways!
“It is our goal to introduce the love for the outdoors to those children and families who might not have the opportunity to experience it very often”, proclaimed Michael McConnell, Founder of NYC-based Men’s Group, ‘Mastermind Connect’. “Family healthcare is the cornerstone of upward mobility for underserved communities, and I’m honored that our members can play a pivotal role in pushing the envelop forward”.
According to JIG’s COO, Vernon Jones Jr., “Navigating the healthcare landscape in NYC is no easy task. Speaking from personal experience, answers are hard to come by and are definitely not found all in one easy-to-use place. The Healthy NYC Movement is here to change that. Our goal is to galvanize the entire community on a single platform, with one single purpose, which is to equip New Yorkers with the tools necessary to live their best life possible.”
As the 2019-2020 series of events are being solidified, the Healthy NYC platform is poised to become NYC’s go to destination for healthcare information.

A stroke is an attack on the brain, and it can happen to anyone at any age, especially your seniors! According to Stroke.com, “It occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost.”

Once a stroke occurs and your loved one is in recovery mode, Tradition Home Health Care can help your senior adjust back to living normally at home. Tradition offers a large community of screened and professional caregivers that can assist your loved one with recovery.

“Having families, and nearly 400 seniors come out on a Saturday afternoon was great”, stated Vernon Jones , Sr, CEO of JIG Media. “This is only the second year of the HealthyNYC Expo, in Brooklyn, and we expect it to continue to grow.  We had 38 vendor partners this year, and we already have additional companies on our list for next year. I have to give Fidelis Care a special thanks for being our title sponsor this year.  They brought healthcare information and provided face painting booths for the kids.”

58 Year Old Stroke Survivor Finds Happiness At The Canarsie Adult Center

Diane Lovitt is a 57 year old woman who attends the Canarsie Adult Center twice a week to socialize and have fun. Diane has had several strokes, multiple health issues, and she uses a wheelchair to get around, but her health does not prevent her from getting out and having fun!

Twice a week on Thursdays and Fridays, you can find Diane at the Canarsie Adult Center enjoying her day. “I get here and do things, and do things that people didn’t think I could do. I color, socialize, I have lots of friends. Being home keeps me in the bed, not motivated”, says Diane. The Canarsie senior center gives her relief, and an escape from the harsh realities of dealing with her health issues. “I play bingo here, I dance, play a lot of games here that I win, I have so much fun!”

Diane also had an operation done on her left hand, which mean she now temporarily only has her right hand until she gets her prosthetic replacement. “I’m a walking testimony, I write with my right hand, color with my right hand, I was left handed. I do everything for myself, I put my clothes on by myself.” Diane has 7 kids who help her on a daily basis, as well as two caregivers to help her with her daily tasks. Diane makes sure to keep a light spirit at all time. “My kids are proud of me, I’m not a person that sits around and stay sad.”

Overall, Diane enjoys visiting the Canarsie Adult Center. “All of these people here are good people” she says. “Its like God gave me an opportunity to shine, and I’m shining!”

1,000 Affordable Senior Apartments To Be Built in East New York and Brownsville

This News Sponsored by “Seniors Day” at the Healthy NYC Expo (Brooklyn) Saturday Sept. 8, 2018, in East New York. Seniors are encouraged to attend.

New York State Homes and Community Renewal will finance 1,000 affordable homes for seniors on underutilized land owned by the New York City Housing Authority in Central Brooklyn as part of his $1.4 billion Vital Brooklyn Initiative. The newly constructed, 100 percent affordable housing developments will be made available to NYCHA residents and other seniors, and financed with up to $15 million in Federal 9 percent Low Income Housing Tax Credits.

“Every New Yorker deserves access to safe, affordable, clean housing — it is the foundation of our comprehensive efforts to address chronic disparities in Central Brooklyn,” Governor Cuomo said. “This investment will seize the potential of vacant properties and help 1,000 seniors move into quality living environments and support our efforts to improve wellness and opportunities in these communities.”

The Governor’s investment builds off of and credits decades of community-led development efforts in Central Brooklyn to preserve affordable housing and increase homeownership. Community-based organizations like the East Brooklyn Congregations bring together congregations, schools, homeowners associations, and local residents in the Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville/Ocean-Hill, Bushwick, Crown Heights and East New York neighborhoods. This local leadership provides an opportunity for residents to have a voice in decision making about what happens in their community.

The 1,000 affordable senior apartments announced by the Governor today, proposed for the underutilized NYCHA property in Central Brooklyn will be reviewed on a rolling basis by HCR as NYCHA makes properties available through its disposition process. Federal regulations require NYCHA to get tenant feedback, and publish disposition plans annually before allowing for development.

After a development is selected by NYCHA for a site in Central Brooklyn and it has received public input and been reviewed, it will be able to apply to HCR for the $15 million set aside of federal 9 percent federal low-income housing tax credits. Tax credits are the primary tool used to lower the financing costs for housing developments to make them affordable.

Since 2011, HCR has provided financing to create or preserve 14,600 affordable homes in Brooklyn with an investment of almost $2 billion in HCR resources.

Senator Roxanne Persaud said, “From affordable homes for our seniors, to healthy food and community gardens, Governor Cuomo is tackling every angle of community revitalization. I look forward to seeing Central Brooklyn grow and prosper as these investments deliver for our community.”

Assemblywoman Latrice Walker said, “Our seniors are essential members of our community and helping them move to safe, affordable homes is certain to help them, and all of our neighbors, prosper. I am thankful that in Governor Cuomo we have a leader who understands how we must approach community revitalization from every angle.”

New York City Councilmember Alicka Ampry-Samuel said, “Addressing the needs of  New York’s most vulnerable  residents requires dedication, commitment  and direct financial investment. Governor Cuomo has proven to be a leader, committed to NYCHA residents and our seniors. I’m glad to see dedicated funding for the development of 1,000 units of senior housing, in Brooklyn, with Low Income Tax Credits and I look forward to identifying the appropriate land with the support, voice and vision of the community.”

We want each and every patient to have an overwhelmingly positive experience and do everything possible to make sure they do. Our offices are decorated more like a hotel lobby than a doctor’s office; when they need to change, patients are given a modest, plush, white robe and a reusable shopping bag to keep their belongings in. After their exam, we give patients control of their healthcare by allowing them to view their results and images on the revolutionary patient portal.
