Stay Hydrated for the Summer With Powerfully Tasty Nutritious Melons

By Len Canter
HealthDay Reporter

(HealthDay News) — If you’re looking for a tasty way to hydrate in warm weather, a juicy melon is the ticket. Melons are low-calorie, high-water content foods that also provide high doses of certain vitamins, minerals and important phyto-nutrients.

Nutrients in Powerhouse Melons

  • Cantaloupe: vitamins A and C, carotenoids, folate and potassium
  • Honeydew: vitamins B and C, potassium and copper
  • Watermelon: lycopene, vitamins A and C, and potassium

To pick the perfect melon, gently rap it with your knuckles. If it makes a dull thud, it’s full of juice, and ripe for consumption.

Plan To Protect Seniors from Deed Theft Is Laid Out by Surrogate Court Judge Candidate Meredith Jones

This article was first posted on Kings County Politics and has the permission of the publisher to post this article on New York for Seniors.  The content is extremely relevant at this time when people are losing their family homes to deed and equity theft, particularly throughout neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

Meredith Jones, Kings County Surrogate’s Court Judge candidate lays out her plan to protect estates from deed and equity theft.

Jones plans to use her nearly two decades background as an attorney in the Kings County Surrogate’s Court to help Brooklynites save their homes.

“I’ve witnessed firsthand hardworking families lose their homes to deed and equity theft,” Jones said. “These scams are ravaging Brooklyn and robbing whole communities of generational wealth.” said Jones.

Jones’s plan includes:
  1. Carefully reviewing any documents (such as powers of attorney) which authorize the transfer of estate real property;
  2. Requiring transfers or sales of estate real property to be approved by the court, where appropriate;
  3. Requiring that requests to sell estate real property be made on notice to the heirs, clearly stating the proposed purchase price, allowing heirs the opportunity to object to the proposed sale; and
  4. Reviewing proposed “short sales” of estate real property to ensure that the proposed sale benefits the heirs of the estate.

Jones is seeking the Democratic nomination for the judicial seat and if elected would serve 14 years starting in January 2020. The Surrogate’s Court hears cases involving the affairs of decedents, including the probate of wills and the administration of estates. It also handles adoptions.

Jones attended Cornell University and graduated from Cornell Law School in 1996. In 2003, after practicing as a private attorney, she began a full-time position in public service, becoming the first black attorney to serve in the law department of the Kings County Surrogate’s Court.

In her current position as a Court Attorney- Referee, she conducts trials and hearings, performs research and drafts decisions for review by the Surrogate Judge. Jones also conducts settlement conferences, advises the Surrogate Judge on the law and makes recommendations regarding resolution of matters that come before the court.

Additionally, Jones has been found qualified by the Judicial Screening Committee of the Kings County Democratic Party for the position of Judge of the Surrogate’s Court. She is the only candidate found qualified who can serve the complete term of office.

Don’t forget to Vote Tuesday June 25, 2019.

Seniors Facing Foreclosure After Being Sold Reverse Mortgages

Leroy Roebuck, 86, of Philadelphia, is fighting to keep his home of at least 55 years where he raised all his kids.

JASPER COLT, USA TODAY

Reverse mortgage commercials air regularly on television, but USA Today has an investigative article, which shows that seniors are facing foreclosure because of these reverse mortgages. (See Video Below)

USA TODAY found that reverse mortgages end in foreclosure six times more often in predominantly black neighborhoods than in neighborhoods that are 80% white.

Even comparing only poorer areas, black neighborhoods fare worse. In ZIP codes where most residents make less than $40,000, the analysis found reverse mortgage foreclosure rates were six times higher in black neighborhoods than in white ones.

The foreclosure disparity resembles a more familiar scenario from the late 2000s, when subprime lenders targeted specific neighborhoods with risky loans doomed to fail, according to the nation’s lead reverse mortgage researcher.

Highlights of the Whopping $92.8 Billion New York City Budget

NEW YORK––Mayor Bill de Blasio, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Council Finance Chair Daniel Dromm and members of the City Council today announced an agreement for an on-time and balanced City budget for Fiscal Year 2020.

The agreement on the approximately $92.8 billion budget includes funding to place 200 additional social workers in public schools, including specialists working within Thrive who will help students experiencing crisis and mental health issues. Further, the City is expanding its commitment to Senior Housing by adding $275 million over Fiscal Years 2020 through 2023. These resources will help generate an additional 800 affordable senior homes. This will raise the total City commitment for newly constructed senior housing to $687 million from now to the end of the housing plan.

“The Fiscal Year 2020 Adopted Budget creates greater fairness for all New Yorkers. We’ve reached an agreement that promises to create a pathway to pay parity for our early childhood education providers to address recruitment and retention issues, expands services that prevent unnecessary detention and fights the widespread national attack on access to abortion care,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We’re also strengthening our support services in schools by providing over 200 social workers for students who need them most, fulfilling our commitment to senior affordable housing and putting our new expanded speed camera program into action. We’re accomplishing all of this while protecting the City’s fiscal health by increasing savings and adding $250 million to our already historic levels of budget reserves. I want to thank Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Finance Chair Daniel Dromm and the rest of the City Council for their partnership.”

As part of the budget agreement, the City is making a commitment to work with early childcare providers and their labor unions to create a pathway to pay parity to address recruitment and retention issues through collective bargaining. Similarly, in recognition of critical role legal defense attorneys play in the justice system, the City will continue conversations with providers to address compensation, recruitment and retention.

The Administration and the City Council have jointly funded justice reform initiatives that address historic disparities in the justice system. This includes an expansion of criminal justice related diversion programs, such as post-arrest diversion, supervised release and transitional housing.

In order to make sure that every New Yorker is counted in the 2020 Census and the city gets its fair share, the Administration has deepened its investment in outreach staff and public awareness campaigns.

The FY20 Adopted Budget also maintains $1.15 billion in General Reserve, an increase of $150 million, $4.57 billion in Retiree Health Benefits Trust Fund, an increase of $100 million, and $250 million in the Capital Stabilization Reserve.

As part of the City’s aggressive savings program, the Adopted Budget includes over $300 million in new savings, on top of the $2.5 billion achieved in the Citywide Savings Program over Fiscal Years 2019 and 2020 since last Adoption. These savings were, in part, attained through the Administration’s first Program to Eliminate the Gap (PEG), and a permanent reduction of 2,600 City-funded positions. 325 additional vacancies will be reduced in this plan, adding $25 million in savings. The Citywide Savings Plan is an element of strong fiscal management, and helps balance the City’s budget and finance initiatives in an era of slowing revenue growth.

Highlights of the Fiscal Year 2020 Adopted Budget include:

  • Placing 200 additional social workers in DOE schools, including mental health specialists, to help support students and provide necessary social and emotional support ($26 million).
  • Investing jointly with the City Council in an expansion of criminal justice related diversion programs, such as post arrest diversion, supervised release and transitional housing.
  • Installing low noise “rumbler” sirens on FDNY vehicles to help reduce noise pollution ($1.5 million).
  • Funding for Vision Zero public awareness campaigns to educate drivers and support pedestrian and cyclist safety ($5 million).
  • Launching NYC Care to guarantee healthcare access for 600,000 uninsured New Yorkers and enhance MetroPlus, NYC’s Public Option, by increasing enrollment and improving access to care, including mental health services ($25 million in Fiscal Year 2020, ramping up to $100 million in Fiscal Year 2022).
  • Expanding 3-K for All by funding 1,900 new seats in the Bronx (District 8) and Brooklyn (District 32) for next school year. This investment brings 3-K to 14 districts and 20,000 children by September 2020, and includes the 10 highest-need districts in the city ($25 million).
  • Increasing Mayoral funding for 2020 Census outreach staff and public awareness campaigns to ensure a fair and accurate count that gives New York City its fair share ($22 million for a total Mayoral investment of $26 million).
  • Fulfilling a commitment to energy efficiency with green technology by retrofitting City buildings as part of NYC’s Green New Deal ($60 million).
  • Providing annual funding for the “Bridging the Gap” program that provides social services and academic support for students in shelters ($14 million).

Getting Your Nutrients: From the Source or Supplements?

By Len Canter
HealthDay Reporter

Americans are making shifts in the supplements they take — fewer multivitamins and vitamins C and E, more fish oil and vitamin D. Many think of supplements as magic bullets, but studies don’t always support their supposed benefits.

Some research is positive. Vitamin D is important for good health and very hard to get naturally from foods or, if you live in northern latitudes, from the sun. So you might need a supplement to meet daily needs. But first ask your doctor for a blood test to check your level and, if it’s low, whether it’s safe for you to sit in the sun twice a week for 15 minutes to allow your body to make D naturally.

Significant studies show that it’s better to get certain nutrients directly from food. For instance, while foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, from walnuts to oily fish, have been linked to reduced risk of heart disease, the omega-3s in fish oil capsules may not deliver the same benefits.

A 2018 study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that many supplements — from vitamins A and D to the minerals selenium and chromium — contain higher amounts of the nutrient than stated on the label. That’s a concern because some good-for-you supplements can be harmful at high doses — even calcium, which is highly touted for bone health. If you can’t get enough calcium through diet and bone density testing shows that you need to supplement, ask your doctor about safe limits.

In fact, whether you’re thinking about an herbal supplement or a proven vitamin or mineral, talk to your health care provider first. Some may interact with medications you take or could pose a risk if you have an illness or are scheduled for surgery.

Heart Attack Rehab At Home Could Save Lives

(HealthDay News) — If you had a heart attack and could get rehab therapy at home, would you be more likely to get the follow-up care that doctors recommend?

A new scientific statement says you would, and advocates for the option to be more widely available because so many patients never get the therapy — often because health insurance companies don’t cover at-home therapy.

Cardiac rehabilitation is typically provided in a medical center and includes exercise training, nutrition advice and mental health counseling to help patients recover from heart attack, heart failure, angioplasty and bypass surgery.

It can reduce the risk of future heart attacks and improve quality of life.

However, about 80% of U.S. patients who would benefit from cardiac rehabilitation do not receive it, according to Dr. Randal Thomas, chair of the writing group for the statement from American Heart Association (AHA), American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

“There are significant barriers that prevent patients from getting the cardiac rehabilitation care that they need. And there aren’t enough programs in the United States to meet the needs of every patient that would benefit,” said Thomas, medical director of the cardiac rehabilitation program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

“There is an urgent need to find new ways of delivering cardiac rehabilitation programs to patients. Home-based care is an excellent option for some patients who aren’t able to attend a center-based program,” Thomas said in an AHA news release.

The statement also offers guidance for medically supervised home-based cardiac rehabilitation.

“A home-based cardiac rehabilitation program is much more than advising a patient to exercise at home,” Thomas said.

“For patients whose heart disease is stable, home-based cardiac rehabilitation is administered and monitored in the same way and by the same health care team as with medical center-based cardiac rehabilitation. The difference is that supervision and coaching are done remotely, using smartphones or other technology,” Thomas explained.

An effective home-based program ensures that patients are taking the right medications, are improving exercise and nutrition habits, and that steps are being taken to address their mental health, medical conditions linked to heart disease — such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol — and risk factors for heart disease such as smoking.

Patients also need to monitored for any heart disease symptoms or for side effects of medications.

“All of these components should be in place with a high-quality home-based program — if they are not, patients could be receiving less care than they need,” Thomas noted.

Heart patients should talk with their health care providers about their rehabilitation options, which could be center-based, home-based or a combination of the two.

“Unfortunately, cardiac rehabilitation in the home-based setting is generally not covered by most insurance carriers, including Medicare. As more evidence accumulates to support home-based cardiac rehabilitation and the technology advances to make this more feasible, we need to work together with policymakers to find ways for these services to be covered,” Thomas said.

The statement was published in the AHA journal Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention.

New York City Digital Media Platform Launching to Connect Caregivers Directly To Home Health Care Agencies

JIG Media, the hyper-local digital marketing agency, located in DUMBO, Brooklyn, will be expanding its healthy living initiative in New York City through the launch of NYCHomeHealthCare.com, as the digital media platform to empower New York City caregivers.

“We’ve been working closely with home care agencies, health plans, seniors and caregivers for the past four years, and we realized that there is a void in the marketplace for resource information dedicated to the caregiver”, stated Vernon Jones Sr., CEO of JIG Media. “If a person has an elderly parent or loved one who is in need of home care or rehabilitation after a surgery, the discharge department in the hospital would recommend a home care agency or rehabilitation facility. The problem is that the choice is not always the right one for the family. Family members should be knowledgeable of the home care and rehabilitation options that are available before a loved one goes in for a surgery or hospital stay. NYCHomeHealthCare.com will do just that. The website will be loaded with resource information, features on home care agencies, videos, and a lot more.”

The website will include in depth and constant content on the following topics, specifically for the New York City market:

  • Choosing a home care agency.
  • Do I qualify for home care?
  • Does my health plan pay for the home care agency that I like?
  • Feature stories on home care agencies.
  • What’s the difference between a home aide and home attendant?
  • Lists of agencies that are Official Partners of New York for Seniors®

“We went on a tour at a home care facility recently and were very impressed with their concept and their training program”, stated Jones. “Caregivers should know that this particular agency exists, in the event that they might need home care for themselves or a loved one. When you become ill or are forced to go in for an emergency surgery you are not thinking about home care, so at that point you are at the mercy of the hospital discharge unit to refer you to a home care agency or rehabilitation center. Our goal is to create and distribute on-going information to seniors, adult children of seniors, and to the general population of New Yorkers, who might need home care one day. The power to choose home care and rehabilitation centers should be in the hands of the caregiver or patient. This digital media platform will empower caregivers with the ability to make informed choices.”

The website will also contain important information for home care workers and agencies, such as healthcare job fairs, training information, news about the industry.  Caregivers can subscribe to the new platform at NYCHomeHealthCare.com.

JIG Media also operates the New York for Seniors Health & Wellness Resource Series, which will expand to include home care workshops to keep seniors informed of their home health care options.

For more information or to partner with JIG Media on the NYC Home Health Care initiative you can call JIG Media at 718-285-9351.

Faith Based Fitness Programs: What’s in it for you?

By Len Canter
HealthDay Reporter

Faith-based fitness is on the rise, according to trend-watchers at the American Council on Exercise, with many churches, mosques, synagogues and temples developing programs that promote health and wellness.

From exercise classes to nutrition advice and health coaching, congregants can enhance their physical as well as their spiritual well-being.

More than just another fitness fad, research has found an explanation for the spirituality-wellness connection: The strong sense of community in faith-based programs can lead to fitness success. That’s especially true when they include partnerships with health organizations, local hospitals, medical schools and other access to medical experts, and when they promote positive behavioral changes and supportive social relationships.

These programs can instill a commitment among participants that exceeds that of a commercial diet group, for instance.

Studies show that traditional houses of worship tend to offer more disease screening and health education activities, while more modern ones tend to offer disease prevention and lifestyle activities to the community at large.

At their core, all such programs address fitness and health issues in a spiritual environment that may make it easier to change habits because of congregants’ belief in their church’s role in promoting health along with the ability to deepen bonds with fellow congregants.

If your religious institution offers exercise classes, consider the role they can play in achieving your fitness goals and take the first step by signing up and making the commitment to at least a month of sessions to notice a difference.

Bright Health’s Innovative Partnership With Mt Sinai To Offer Superior Healthcare in New York City

Bright Health’s innovative Care Partner Health Plan model works exclusively with one health system per market to offer superior, integrated care “under one roof”. This relationship allows for coordination of services, technology, data and administration to optimize consumer and patient experience.  It creates a unique alignment between Bright Health and Mount Sinai when serving Bright Health members, with the promise of enhanced benefits, better outcomes and reduced healthcare costs overall.

“Over the past decade, we have been witnessing an evolving healthcare delivery landscape, marked by consolidation of small, independent providers into large, comprehensive health systems,” said Bob Sheehy, CEO of Bright Health, and former CEO of United Healthcare. “Mount Sinai is an exemplar of health systems that are doing this right – offering quality integrated care and expanded services to their patients. We are thrilled to partner with them to deliver quality care that is more affordable to hardworking New York City residents.  Our unique model is the next generation of health care – putting consumers first, eliminating the friction that has existed between providers and insurers in the past and allowing our members to focus on what really matters – their health.”

“We are honored that Bright Health asked us to anchor the provider network for its new Medicare Advantage offering in New York City,” said Stephen Furia, Senior Vice President of Population Health Solutions for Mount Sinai Health Partners. “For years, Mount Sinai has been investing heavily to improve the health of all of the populations we serve, especially seniors, but we need help from our health plan partners to be successful. Bright Health shares our goals for population health and has some impressive ideas for how they can empower our doctors, from behind the scenes, to achieve them. They also bring innovations that extend our doctor’s support for patients, especially in between visits when seniors need personalized help to stay on track. This new collaboration model holds great potential, giving our doctors the tools they need to optimize outcomes for our patients: high-quality care, personalized service at an affordable price. We’re excited for a long-term collaboration with Bright Health.”

Seniors Can Qualify for Medicaid & Receive Home Care Even if Their Income Exceeds the NY State Limit

The most common challenge for New York’s seniors looking to get home care, is qualifying for Medicaid, which will pay for the needed home care.  Some seni0rs might barely be above the income level required by NY State, making them ineligible for Medicaid.   This so-called surplus income is referred to as “spend-down”. Medicaid requires consumers to “spend-down” their income that is above the limit towards the cost of health care before accessing Medicaid benefits. A  NY State approved ‘Pooled Trust’ might be the answer for seniors or adult children who are trying to find a way to pay for home care for parents over the age of 65.

What is a Pooled Trust?

In simple terms, a Pooled Trust, operated by a non-profit organization for the benefit of many people with disabilities, is a special type of trust that allows individuals to become financially eligible for public assistance benefits (Medicaid) while preserving their resources. It is also a means of helping people stay in their own homes as long as possible.

If you have specific questions about ‘Pooled Trust’ call SCS Pooled Trust at (718) 971-2509. SCS Pooled Trust is an Official Partner organization of New York for Seniors®.  An SCS Pooled Trust representative will be present at the New York for Seniors Health & Wellness Resource Fair in Harlem, Thursday May 9, 2019.  You can Register here to come to the fair.  You can call SCS or discuss the details with them at the event.

New York City’s Largest Health Systems To Hire Over 1,000 Nurses And Raise Wages

The standoff between the New York State Nurses Association and New York City’s three largest health systems, Mount Sinai, Montefiore and New York-Presbyterian, ended with the hospitals agreeing to spend $100 million to hire 1,450 nurses, and increase wages by 3%.

See the message below from the NY State Nurse’s Association.

Recently a tentative agreement (TA) was reached with the formerly “Alliance” New York City hospitals of Mount Sinai, Mount Sinai West, St. Luke’s, New York Presbyterian, and Montefiore.

The TA includes a $100 million commitment for additional staffing, allowing for hundreds of additional nurses to be hired in these hospitals.
A detailed summary will follow, but highlights of the TA include:

• Enforceable Staffing Ratios: We have finally achieved the goal of having staffing ratios spelled out in the contract with a meaningful enforcement mechanism. This sets a standard not just for New York, but for the nation.
• Four Year Agreement: Our agreement ensures staffing, security, and strength for the next four years, expiring Dec. 31, 2022.
• Industry Leading Wage Increases: With minimum wage increases of three percent (3%) in each year of the contract including retro, we have secured industry leading wages for our profession.
• Retiree Health Benefits: For all facilities, we were able to achieve benefits, allowing members to maintain health benefits after early retirement (subject to key conditions).

Several other agreements were reached on priority issues at the local bargaining tables. This agreement was only achieved through the unity of thousands of nurses, exercising our power to win for our patients, our communities, and ourselves.

This agreement is subject to ratification. Stay tuned for the official ratification vote schedule at all hospitals. Please feel free to print out this leaflet to distribute.

Healthy Eating

HealthyNYC Tip of the Week; Burgers & Chips Are Among the World’s Biggest Killers

(HealthDay News) — Bad diets are shortening lives worldwide — killing more people globally than either smoking or high blood pressure, a large, new research suggests.

The study, of nearly 200 countries, linked poor diet quality to nearly 11 million deaths globally in 2017. That translated to 22 percent of deaths among all adults that year.

Previous research has linked tobacco use to 8 million deaths per year worldwide, and high blood pressure to just over 10 million deaths.

But it’s not surprising that diet is so critical, said lead researcher Dr. Ashkan Afshin, of the University of Washington in Seattle.

Poor nutrition helps drive many health conditions, from high blood pressure to type 2 diabetes, he noted.

And it’s not just a matter of people eating too much junk food, which is common in wealthy nations like the United States.

“We often talk about the foods that are ‘bad,’ and what you shouldn’t eat,” Afshin said. “But this is also about what you should eat.”

The analysis pointed to some eating habits with particularly strong links to higher death rates: diets high in sodium, and those low in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds.

Basically, Afshin said, it all supports a common refrain when it comes to diet advice: Eat fewer processed foods and more “whole” plant-based foods.

That is the bottom line, agreed Dr. Andrew Freeman, who directs cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver.

“People are missing a lot from their diets,” he said. “If you include more whole, plant-based foods, that will push out some of the bad things.”

Freeman, who was not involved in the study, recently headed a research review examining some diet “hypes” — certain foods touted as having heart benefits.

The conclusion? The best evidence supports not miracle foods, but an overall diet high in fruits and vegetables, legumes and nuts, and fiber-rich whole grains.

For the new study, Afshin’s team used published nutrition surveys to look at typical dietary intakes across 195 countries, plus published research on the relationship between various diet factors and disease risks.

For example, to estimate the impact of salty diets, the researchers looked at the evidence on urinary sodium levels and changes in blood pressure — and then estimated the relationship between those blood pressure changes and disease outcomes.

There were, not surprisingly, differences in the typical diet across world regions: People in the United States and Canada tended to eat the most processed meats and trans fats from packaged foods, for example.

But consumption of sugary drinks and sodium was too high in nearly all world regions, the researchers noted.

Meanwhile, healthy foods were shortchanged almost universally, with a few exceptions: People in Central Asia tended to eat enough vegetables, while those in parts of Latin America, Africa and South Asia typically got plenty of legumes.

On the whole, though, unbalanced diets were a health threat everywhere. Oceania and East Asia had the highest proportion of “diet-related” deaths from heart disease, for example. Diet-related deaths from type 2 diabetes complications were highest in the United States and Canada.

The impact of diet was seen not only in death rates, but in quality of life, according to Afshin.

In 2017, poor diets were associated with 255 million disability-adjusted life years — a summary of overall life years lost, plus time lived with a disability.

The findings were published April 3 in The Lancet journal.

To Freeman, it all points to the huge impact diet choices have on people’s longevity and well-being. “I don’t know how many alarms we need before we start making changes,” he said.

But it’s not only individuals who need to pay attention, both Freeman and Afshin said: Society as a whole, including health care systems and policymakers, needs to promote healthy whole foods over processed foods, red meat and butter.

It’s never too late to make wise diet changes — and Freeman said that patients are often motivated to “get off pills” for managing conditions like high blood pressure.

But ideally, he noted, people shouldn’t wait until diseases have developed.
