A newly appointed official by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani quit just a day after her appointment following the resurfacing of antisemitic content from her past social media.
Catherine Almonte Da Costa, named as Director of Appointments, resigned on Tuesday afternoon, only hours after her past online remarks were made public. In her resignation statement, Da Costa commented, “As the mother of Jewish children, I am truly saddened and regretful for the harm my comments have caused.” She said, “Since this situation has become a distraction from the administration’s goals, I have chosen to step down.”
Judge Street Journal revealed a number of social media comments by Da Costa using antisemitic clichés. Among them: “Money hungry Jews smh”; “Woo! Promoted to the upstairs office today! Working alongside these rich Jewish peeps.”; and “Far Rockaway train is the Jew train.”
According to their report, these posts were made several years ago and gained attention soon after Da Costa’s appointment. Following the reporting, she removed her X profile.
The incident puts a spotlight on the pressure facing the Mamdani administration as it fills key roles and addresses concerns about antisemitism and transparency.
