The race for New York Attorney General is heating up as Republican Saritha Komatireddy moves to challenge Letitia James. Komatireddy, a political outsider and former federal prosecutor, told The Post that she sees a path to victory because New Yorkers are “tired of the lawlessness” under James’ tenure.

From Manhattan to Brooklyn and the Bronx, residents have voiced growing frustration over crime, enforcement, and government oversight, concerns Komatireddy is using to frame her campaign message.

Who Is Saritha Komatireddy?

Komatireddy is a Manhattan-based mother of four and a career lawyer with an extensive record in federal prosecution. Motivated into public service after the 9/11 terror attacks, she handled cases against Al Qaeda and ISIS terrorists, later working with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

She earned her law degree from Harvard Law and clerked for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. In 2020, she was nominated for a federal judgeship by President Trump, although the nomination did not advance before the end of his term. She is now a partner at Holzman Vogel.

Komatireddy’s Campaign Message

Komatireddy is focusing her campaign on safety, accountability, and rooting out perceived lawlessness. She told The Post:

“These things affect innocent people. They affect everyday New Yorkers. And I think New Yorkers across the political spectrum just are tired of the lawlessness,” said Komatireddy, 41.

She argues that woke and soft-on-crime policies have made it tougher for residents to live safely in New York. Her platform includes cracking down on drug crimes, antisemitism, and oversight of public institutions like homeless shelters.

“We have to make sure that the people taking taxpayer money to provide services are actually providing those services,” she argued.
“When we audit and investigate every homeless shelter in the state, we will be able to see who’s doing a good job, who’s doing a bad job, who is creating a safe space and who is not,” Komatireddy said.

She also emphasizes tackling grift and political favoritism:

“Everyone in an official position is friends with everyone else, and no one’s really a check,” Komatireddy said adding that she would not “target people for their politics.”

Tish James’ Record

Tish James has served as attorney general since 2019, following the resignation of Eric Schneiderman. She has a long record of high-profile lawsuits and legal action against corporations and political figures, making her a central figure in New York politics.

Supporters view James as a progressive champion enforcing accountability, while critics argue that some of her actions target political opponents rather than focusing on everyday law enforcement issues a criticism Komatireddy has made clear.

“That was wrong. Real prosecutors, they don’t target people. They target crimes,” Komatireddy said, criticizing James’ prosecution of political figures.

Election Landscape and Voter Demographics

The GOP faces an uphill battle in New York: no Republican has served as attorney general since Dennis Vacco in 1998, and no Republican has won statewide since former Gov. George Pataki in 2002. Democrats now represent 48% of registered voters, Republicans 22%, and 25% are unaffiliated, according to the latest Board of Elections data.

Despite these odds, Komatireddy believes her message of safety, accountability, and law enforcement will resonate with voters across the state.

Komatireddy said she’s confident having a message of safety and community should resonate enough to get her enough attention ahead of November.

Building Momentum: GOP Nomination and Campaign Allies

Komatireddy was tapped as the Republicans’ nominee at a convention in Nassau County last month, beating out competitors including Khurram Dara. She will run alongside gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman and comptroller candidate Joseph Hernandez on the GOP ticket.

Her campaign is heavily focused on contrasting her outsider, law-and-order credentials with what she describes as James’ political enforcement record.

“I would rule out making decisions based on politics. I’m not going to have a knee-jerk partisan reaction to anything,” Komatireddy said, emphasizing her non-partisan approach to the AG role.

Why This Race Matters

The New York Attorney General’s office carries enormous influence, controlling investigations, consumer protections, and lawsuits that can have national impact. For voters, this election is about who they trust to enforce laws fairly and prioritize public safety.

This contest also highlights ongoing debates over law enforcement, government accountability, and political influence in the state, issues that affect everyday New Yorkers from every borough.
