In recognition of Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women across generations, the story of Judge Beverly S. Tatham stands as a powerful example of strength in action. Her journey, from growing up in Brownsville to serving on the bench as a Civil Court Judge and aspiring Supreme Court Justice, reflects the very essence of perseverance, leadership, and service that Women’s History Month celebrates.

For Beverly S. Tatham, strength is not something she talks about, it’s something she lives.

From the courtrooms of Brooklyn to the communities of Brownsville where she was raised, Judge Tatham’s life has been defined by perseverance, service, and an unshakable sense of purpose. As a Civil Court Judge with aspirations to serve as a New York State Supreme Court Justice, her journey reflects not only professional excellence, but a deeply personal story of resilience.

She is also a three-time cancer survivor.

And yet, that is only one chapter in a life built on overcoming, giving back, and continuing forward, no matter the challenge.

Rooted in Brooklyn, Guided by Purpose

Born and raised in Brownsville by an immigrant single mother, Judge Tatham’s foundation was shaped early by discipline, curiosity, and a desire to understand fairness. That curiosity would later become a driving force in her legal career, one centered on asking not just what the law says, but how it impacts people’s lives.

She went on to attend St. John’s University, earning a degree in Paralegal Studies, before obtaining her Juris Doctor from Touro Law School. During her time in law school, she worked directly with low-income residents and immigrant women navigating family court matters, including domestic violence cases, experiences that would leave a lasting impact on her approach to justice.

“I’ve always believed that understanding people’s stories matters,” she has shared in reflecting on her work. “The law is important, but so is the human experience behind every case.”

A Career Built on Advocacy and Experience

Before taking the bench, Judge Tatham spent nearly two decades as a trial attorney, representing clients in both state and federal courts. Her work spanned litigation, mediation, arbitration, and settlement negotiations, building a comprehensive understanding of the legal system from multiple angles.

That depth of experience now informs her work as a Civil Court Judge, where she is responsible for making decisions that can significantly impact individuals, families, and communities.

Her approach is grounded in fairness, independence, and careful listening, qualities that have become hallmarks of her judicial philosophy.

“Every decision carries weight,” she has said. “You have to be thoughtful, you have to be fair, and you have to remember what’s at stake for the people involved.”

Resilience Through Adversity

Perhaps the most powerful part of Judge Tatham’s story is not found in a courtroom, but in her personal journey.

As a three-time cancer survivor, she has faced battles that required not only physical strength, but emotional and spiritual endurance. Through each challenge, she remained grounded in her faith and committed to continuing her work.

Rather than stepping away, she leaned in, continuing to serve, mentor, and lead.

“My faith has carried me through some of the most difficult moments in my life,” says Tatham. “It reminds me that there is always purpose, even in the hardest seasons.”

Her resilience is not something she separates from her professional life, it is something that shapes how she shows up every day.

Mentorship, Service, and Community Impact

Beyond the courtroom, Judge Tatham has spent more than 20 years mentoring young women across Brooklyn. Through leadership programs, educational initiatives, and community engagement, she has helped create spaces where young women can grow, find their voices, and see themselves as future leaders.

She has also organized community conversations, supported initiatives addressing women’s health and social equity, and worked with numerous local organizations to expand access to resources and opportunity.

For her, service is not separate from her career, it is central to it.

“Leadership is about lifting others as you move forward,” she has said. “If we’re not creating opportunities for the next generation, we’re missing the bigger picture.”

Looking Ahead: A Natural Next Step

With her extensive legal experience, deep community ties, and demonstrated leadership, Judge Tatham sees serving as a Supreme Court Justice as a natural next step in her journey.

Her career has prepared her not only to interpret the law, but to do so with wisdom, balance, and an understanding of the communities she serves.

When asked about the possibility of moving up to Supreme Court, Tatham told us, “I’ve dedicated my life to service.  Continuing that work at the highest level would be an honor.”

A Story That Inspires Beyond the Bench

Judge Beverley Tatham’s story is not just about professional achievement. It is about resilience in the face of adversity, faith during uncertainty, and a commitment to lifting others along the way.

For women navigating their own challenges, whether in their careers, their health, or their personal lives—her journey is a powerful reminder that strength is not about avoiding hardship, but about continuing forward through it.

In every role she holds, judge, mentor, survivor, and woman of faith—she embodies what it means to lead with purpose.

And her story is still being written.
