Williamsburg Says Goodbye to Mekelburg’s Restaurant Bar

Posted By Lu R

Mekelburg’s, a cherished grocery, bar, and restaurant in Brooklyn located at 319 Kent Avenue, Williamsburg, will permanently close on January 1, 2026, as confirmed by its owners via both Instagram and local news outlets.

In an emotional post on Instagram, the Mekelburg’s team reminisced about the past decade, thanking loyal customers and remarking “Ten years” as they encouraged supporters to visit before the end. The farewell message referenced the journey since opening “in 2015 in Clinton Hill” and acknowledged that this chapter is closing.

A Beloved Spot Bids Farewell

The original Clinton Hill location opened in 2015, with expansion to Williamsburg following in 2022. Mekelburg’s became known for its craft beer, unique sandwiches, babka, and popular community trivia, as well as being a welcoming space for neighborhood regulars and newcomers.

Reports confirm that the Williamsburg shop will serve its last customers New Year’s Eve (January 1), ending nearly ten years in Brooklyn, from Clinton Hill beginnings to the Domino Park storefront.

Guevara’s Also Shuttering

The nearby vegan spot, Guevara’s, run by Daniel Mekelburg’s wife Alicia Guevara, will also close on the same day, as indicated in the original Instagram statement.

Community Responses

Many locals have expressed their sorrow and shared memories online. Regulars on Reddit and elsewhere note Mekelburg’s distinctive place in Williamsburg’s food and drink community thanks to its craft beer program and locally inspired menu.

No Closure Explanation Yet

Neither Mekelburg’s nor early news stories have provided a specific reason for the closure, leaving open questions about leases, rising operating expenses, or general NYC business challenges.

With only days left, consider stopping by Mekelburg’s or Guevara’s to support these neighborhood favorites and show appreciation for their decade-long run.
