Brooklyn Struggles Against Unstoppable Hunter College Hawks in Volleyball

Tuesday night was a show of force for the Hunter College Hawks men’s volleyball squad, as they made quick work of Brooklyn College in a confident, straight-sets victory at the Hunter Sportsplex. This result further solidifies their standing in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), and it’s clear the Hawks are in the midst of a strong season.

With this win, Hunter moves to 15-6 on the year and 4-2 in CUNYAC play. Brooklyn, meanwhile, drops to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Strong Start Sets the Tone for Hunter College Hawks

Right from the opening whistle, it was clear both sides came to fight—trading points and keeping the first set close. But when it mattered, Hunter nudged ahead, using crisp offense and sharp execution to seal the set 25-22.

From there, the Hawks only shifted into a higher gear. They dominated the second set with a blistering .571 hitting percentage and kept the momentum rolling into the third with a .474 mark, ending the night with an efficient .429 overall. Hunter racked up 34 kills and committed just seven errors in the whole match.

Offensive Efficiency Leads the Charge

Ahmed Mohamed provided a spark with 11 kills, hitting .529 and tossing in two service aces for good measure. Emmanuel Cochran stayed nearly perfect with five kills on only six swings, while K-Ci Akwandoh put up six kills and stuffed four blocks.

Sebastian Gomez contributed both ways with five kills and three blocks, and setter Wesley Stubbs orchestrated the attack flawlessly, picking up 27 assists, four kills on a remarkable .800 hitting percentage, plus three blocks.

Defense and Net Control Secure the Sweep

On defense, the Hawks kept things tight. Bradley Campos anchored the back row with six digs, backed by Crisostomo Ibarra’s three.

Up front, the net belonged to Hunter. The team combined for 16 blocks and suffocated Brooklyn College, holding them to just a .013 hitting percentage.

The Hawks will look to keep rolling when they host a nonconference tri-match against Vassar and NJCU this Saturday, riding high on their recent momentum.
