A new educational facility proposed for East New York could bring classroom space for hundreds of students as the Brooklyn neighborhood continues to grow.
According to information distributed through NYC Newswire, plans have been filed with the New York City Department of Buildings for a seven-story academic building at 556 New Lots Avenue, located between Hendrix Street and Van Siclen Avenue.
Transit Access and Neighborhood Location
The proposed site sits just one block south of the Van Siclen Avenue subway station, which is served by the 2, 3, 4, and 5 train lines, placing the potential school within easy reach of students and families throughout the East New York community.
Public filings indicate the project is being developed by Soly Bawabeh of Midyan Gate Realty No. 4 LLC. Earlier concepts for the property had proposed a mixed-use project that would combine a charter school with commercial space. The newly submitted plans instead focus on a dedicated educational facility designed to support learning and community use.

Planned School Features
The proposed building would rise approximately 105 feet and include more than 51,000 square feet of space designated for community facility use. Plans outline multiple classroom floors, along with a gymnasium and lecture hall on the first floor. The fifth floor is expected to include an auditorium and recreational area designed for school events and student activities.
Project documents indicate the facility could serve approximately 500 students once completed, with the overall development totaling more than 60,000 square feet.
Community Impact in East New York
The site sits near the intersection of Van Siclen Avenue and New Lots Avenue, about two blocks from the New Lots Public Library. The property currently houses a discount retail store.
Education infrastructure has become an increasingly important topic in East New York as the neighborhood continues to see new housing and population growth. Community leaders and residents have often emphasized the need for additional schools and educational facilities to keep pace with the area’s development.
Next Steps for the Proposal
The proposal must still move through the city’s approval process before construction could begin. If approved, the facility could represent another investment in educational resources for East New York families.
