Pop-Up Library Opens as Carroll Gardens Branch Renovates
BROOKLYN, NY — To support Carroll Gardens and adjacent communities during the significant renovation of the historic Carroll Gardens Library, the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) has opened a temporary library at 250 Baltic Street. The inauguration was attended by elected leaders, city officials, and community partners instrumental in bringing the pop-up to life.
Patrons now have uninterrupted access to borrowing books, signing up for cards, placing holds, and returning items at this location, which serves Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, and the Columbia waterfront neighborhoods.
Robin Lester Kenton, BPL Executive Vice President of External Affairs, remarked, “We are excited to invite everyone to explore the Carroll Gardens Pop Up Library this summer. My heartfelt thanks to Commissioner Louis A. Molina at the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, Mike Racioppo of CB6, and supporters including State Senator Andrew Gounardes, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, and Council Member Shahana Hanif. Special appreciation to Ikea for donating furnishings. This pop-up reflects true teamwork for our library’s patrons.”
Grants and Community Backing
Funding for the pop-up came from State Senator Andrew Gounardes, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, and Council Member Shahana Hanif. “Libraries are vital community windows, and every resident should have access,” Senator Gounardes said. “The Carroll Gardens Library is an anchor, and this temporary site ensures its legacy continues.”
Assemblymember Simon said, “I’m delighted the public can once again use library services in this neighborhood through this interim location. Residents cared deeply about their library, and the pop-up fills a gap.”
Council Member Hanif noted the need for speed, “Construction has dragged on and we couldn’t leave residents without library resources any longer. This launch is about reconnecting our community through books and learning.”
A Collaborative Effort
The NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services made the space available for the temporary library. DCAS Commissioner Louis A. Molina shared: “We were eager to help when BPL needed a new location to keep serving Carroll Gardens. This pop-up site is a testament to community spirit and public service.”
CB6 District Manager Mike Racioppo, who secured the site, added, “Turning great ideas into action requires coordination—CB6 was glad to step up and open this space. It shows government can make a real difference.”
IKEA Brooklyn’s Contribution
Furniture and supplies for the pop-up were generously provided by IKEA Brooklyn.
“IKEA Brooklyn is proud to be involved with BPL and hopes this space is a safe, helpful haven for all,” said Stephanie Perez, Local Marketing Specialist.
Renovating a Historic Treasure
Serving the neighborhood for almost 120 years, the Carroll Gardens Library is being updated with a teens’ mezzanine, advanced lighting, improved fire safety, HVAC upgrades, and restoration of historic elements. The pop-up library is supported by the BPL bookmobile and ongoing programs at spots like St. Paul’s Church.
Pop-Up Library Hours:
Monday & Tuesday: 1–5 p.m.
Thursday: 3–7 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
The temporary location will remain open until renovations are completed at the permanent Carroll Gardens Library.
