The Hunter College Hawks men’s volleyball team delivered a commanding performance in conference play Tuesday night, defeating Brooklyn College in straight sets at the Hunter Sportsplex. The win strengthens Hunter’s position in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) standings as the team continues its strong season.
Hunter improved to 15-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Brooklyn dropped to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in CUNYAC competition.
Strong Start Sets the Tone for Hunter College Hawks
The opening set was the most competitive stretch of the match, featuring multiple early ties as both teams looked to establish control. Hunter pulled ahead late in the set, closing it out 25-22 with timely offense and solid execution.
After that point, Hunter elevated its performance and controlled the pace of play. The team recorded a .571 hitting percentage in the second set and followed with a .474 mark in the third to complete the sweep. For the match, Hunter posted an efficient .429 hitting percentage, finishing with 34 kills and just seven errors.
Offensive Efficiency Leads the Charge
Ahmed Mohamed paced the attack with 11 kills while hitting .529 and adding two service aces. Emmanuel Cochran delivered an efficient outing with five kills on six attempts, while K-Ci Akwandoh contributed six kills and added four blocks at the net.
Sebastian Gomez chipped in with five kills and three blocks, providing balance on both offense and defense. Setter Wesley Stubbs guided the offense with 27 assists while also adding four kills on an impressive .800 hitting percentage and contributing three blocks.
Defense and Net Control Secure the Sweep
Defensively, the Hawks remained steady throughout the match. Bradley Campos led the team with six digs, while Crisostomo Ibarra added three digs to support the back row.
At the net, Hunter’s presence was decisive. The team totaled 16 blocks and held Brooklyn College to a .013 hitting percentage, limiting scoring opportunities and maintaining control from start to finish.
The Hawks return to action Saturday for a nonconference home tri-match against Vassar and NJCU, looking to build on their momentum.
