NYC’s First Baby of 2026 Arrives at Harlem Hospital

Posted By Lucille RS

There are plenty of ways to ring in the New Year in New York City, fireworks, countdowns, family dinners, and parties across every borough.

But this year, something extra special happened right as the clock struck midnight.

At 12:00 AM on January 1, 2026, NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem welcomed the first baby born in the city’s public health system this year. A precious baby girl, weighing 7 lbs. 2.8 oz and measuring 21.26 inches.

Talk about starting 2026 in the best way possible.

Born in Harlem, surrounded by caring doctors and nurses, this little New Yorker arrived right on time, a symbol of hope, new beginnings, and everything fresh that a new year brings.

A Proud Harlem Family Welcomes Their Fifth Child

The baby girl, who has not yet been named, was welcomed by her proud parents, Oumy Niang and Amadou Niang.

For the Niang family, Harlem Hospital isn’t just a place, it’s part of their story.

This is their fifth child, and three of their children were also born at Harlem Hospital. That kind of trust says a lot. It shows the deep connection between families and the community hospitals that stand by them through life’s biggest moments.

And once again, Harlem Hospital was there, steady, supportive, and ready.

A New Year Tradition of Caring for Families Across NYC

NYC Health + Hospitals, the city’s public health system, delivers thousands of babies every year.

Across its 11 hospitals, families receive:

  • expert prenatal care
  • labor and delivery services
  • family planning and women’s health
  • comprehensive gynecology
  • primary care support through every stage of life

From the first sonogram to that first cry after delivery, the system is built to care for moms, babies, and families, especially in communities that rely on public hospitals most.

And when the first baby of the year arrives, it’s more than just a milestone. It’s a reminder of the love, dedication, and teamwork happening inside these hospitals every single day.

A Joyful Start to 2026

While most of the city was cheering in the New Year, one tiny baby girl quietly made history, swaddled, peaceful, and completely unaware of the celebration around her.

Her arrival is a beautiful reminder that even in a city as big and busy as New York, moments of pure joy still shine brightest.

To the Niang family, congratulations.
To the incredible Harlem Hospital team, thank you for the care, commitment, and heart you bring to New Yorkers every day.

And to the first baby of 2026:

Welcome to the world, little one.
Welcome to New York.
