Mamdani Appointee Resigns After Old Antisemitic Posts Surface

One of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s recently revealed appointees stepped down just a day after taking the position, following the emergence of past social media posts with antisemitic remarks.

Catherine Almonte Da Costa, appointed as Director of Appointments, handed in her resignation Tuesday afternoon, mere hours after the posts were circulated publicly. In a statement, Da Costa expressed, “As the mother of Jewish children, I am deeply saddened and remorseful for the hurt my words have caused.” She continued, “As this issue diverts from our work, I have decided to resign.”

The Judge Street Journal reported on several controversial social media posts ascribed to Da Costa, which included antisemitic stereotypes. Examples referenced were: “Money hungry Jews smh”; “Woo! Promoted to the upstairs office today! Working alongside these rich Jewish peeps.”; and “Far Rockaway train is the Jew train.”

The outlet noted that these posts were written years prior and surfaced shortly after Da Costa’s role was announced. After news of the posts broke, Da Costa deleted her account on X.

Her quick resignation highlights the intense scrutiny that Mayor-elect Mamdani’s team faces as it forms, amid concerns about antisemitism and public responsibility.
