Stringer\u00a0called on the City to launch an agency-by-agency, neighborhood-by-neighborhood approach to serving\u00a0its\u00a0seniors. Unveiling a new a report \u2013 entitled <em>\u201c<\/em><\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/comptroller.nyc.gov\/reports\/aging-with-dignity-a-blueprint-for-serving-nycs-growing-senior-population\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aging with Dignity: A Blueprint for Serving NYC\u2019s Growing Senior Population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, New York City\u2019s seniors face affordability, transit, housing and other\u00a0obstacles. As the City\u2019s population ages, so too does the urgency for holistic planning:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important Stats<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2040, city planners expect there will be 1.4 million older adults living in New York City \u2013 an increase of hundreds of thousands of people from today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 40 percent of senior-headed households depend on government programs for more than half their income<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six out of 10 senior\u00a0renters\u00a0spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent \u2013\u00a0a\u00a0significantly\u00a0higher\u00a0percentage\u00a0than the general population.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite widespread documentation of these challenges, the City\u00a0is not engaged in\u00a0a comprehensive planning\u00a0process for it seniors.\u00a0As such, today, the Comptroller called for a cohesive, long-term planning process from the City in order to streamline services and\u00a0develop a holistic strategy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Solutions Proposed by Scott Stringer<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Freezing rents by automatically\u00a0enrolling\u00a0New Yorkers in the Senior Citizens Rent Increase\u00a0Exemption (SCRIE):\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional senior\u00a0renters\u00a0can more easily\u00a0remain\u00a0in their apartments if they are\u00a0automatically\u00a0enrolled\u00a0in the (SCRIE) program, which freezes their rent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Limiting\u00a0affordability challenges by expanding tax credits through\u00a0the Senior Citizens Homeowners\u2019 Exemption:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support\u00a0seniors who own their homes, the City should expand eligibility for the program to cover those with incomes up to $50,000.\u00a0That\u00a0would make approximately 29,000 more homeowners eligible for the program and mitigate affordability challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Creating tailored, neighborhood action plans by expanding the Age-Friendly Neighborhoods\u00a0program:<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2010, the\u00a0City launched the\u00a0\u201cAge-Friendly Neighborhoods\u201d program, which created neighborhood action plans for over a dozen neighborhoods to better support seniors.
