Knowing the difference is important, and knowing how to properly react to both of them is essential. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, What\u2019s The Difference? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A heart attack is when the heart is suddenly deprived of oxygen, usually due to a blockage of plaque in the coronary arteries. Cardiac arrest is when the heart\u2019s electrical system suddenly malfunctions. In other words, the heart unexpectedly stops working properly. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Heart Attack Symptoms &amp; Signs <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart attacks are generally caused by heart disease such as coronary heart disease or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrhythmia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can either happen gradually or suddenly. Before experiencing a heart attack, a person may show warning signs. According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/HeartAttack\/WarningSignsofaHeartAttack\/Warning-Signs-of-a-Heart-Attack_UCM_002039_Article.jsp#.VytSxvkrLIU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these signs can include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pressure, squeezing, fullness, pain, or general discomfort, lasting for a few minutes. The pain can come and go, fading in and out <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discomfort in parts of the upper body, including in the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold sweat <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightheadedness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women can experience warning signs of a heart attack with or without chest pains. Because many women do not know this, they often assume signs of a heart attack are caused by another non-threatening issue. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women in the U.S, so it is important to know the warning signs women can experience. These include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightheadedness or fainting <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper back pressure \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of a heart attack include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discomfort from activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficult or labored breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palpitations, or the feeling of the heart beating rapidly<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or someone near you starts to experience these symptoms, <\/span><strong>call 9-1-1 immediately<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seek medical attention. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cardiac Arrest Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiac arrest can occur without prior warning. According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/More\/CardiacArrest\/Warning-Signs-and-Emergency-Treatment-of-Cardiac-Arrest_UCM_307911_Article.jsp#.VytRlvkrLIU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, signs of cardiac arrest are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sudden loss of responsiveness <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>No response to tapping on shoulders<\/li>\n<li>Does nothing when you ask if he\/she is OK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People can experience cardiac arrest with or without a heart disease. They happen suddenly, and can be lethal if not treated as soon as possible. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this happens to someone near you, it is extremely important that you: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Call for help (9-1-1, an emergency response number, etc.)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check if the person is breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform hands-only CPR if the person is not breathing or is only gasping.
