In a move that\u2019s shaking up city politics, a NYC Council Analyst was recently detained by federal immigration officials \u2014 and the reaction has been explosive. What should have been a routine immigration appointment turned into a major showdown between local leaders and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).<\/p>\n

What Happened to the NYC Council Analyst?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On a Monday in January, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detained a NYC Council Analyst during what was supposed to be a routine check\u2011in at an immigration office in Bethpage, Long Island.<\/p>\n

The analyst, identified by federal officials as Rafael Andres Rubio Bohorquez, is a 53\u2011year\u2011old Venezuelan national who works for the New York City Council in a data role.<\/p>\n

City officials say he had legal authorization to stay and work in the United States through October 2026, and that he followed every step required by immigration law.<\/p>\n

But federal agents took him into custody without a clear public explanation, and the incident immediately sparked outrage in City Hall.<\/p>\n

City Leaders Blast Federal Action<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Council Speaker Julie Menin were quick to condemn the arrest.<\/p>\n

Mamdani called the detention \u201can assault on our democracy, on our city, and our values\u201d and demanded the analyst\u2019s immediate release.<\/p>\n

Speaker Menin stressed that the NYC Council Analyst had complied with every requirement, including attending his appointment at the immigration office. She said ICE<\/a> provided \u201cno other basis for his detainment\u201d beyond immigration status.<\/p>\n

Pro\u2011immigrant advocates and politicians also held rallies outside federal offices in Manhattan, chanting slogans and demanding transparency.<\/p>\n

Federal View: DHS Disputes City\u2019s Claims<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While city leaders pushed back, DHS officials told reporters something different.<\/p>\n

According to a federal statement, the NYC Council Analyst entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2017 that required him to leave the country that same year. DHS said he had no valid work authorization and included an alleged past arrest for assault in its justification for detaining him.<\/p>\n

That explanation has further inflamed local critics, who point out that federal immigration enforcement has become more aggressive in recent months.<\/p>\n
