{"id":3404,"date":"2025-07-29T19:58:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T23:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/multi.nycnewsnetwork.com\/nycpolitics\/20-states-led-by-new-york-and-california-sue-trump-administration-over-illegal-data-grab-targeting-snap-recipients\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T19:58:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T23:58:24","slug":"20-states-led-by-new-york-and-california-sue-trump-administration-over-illegal-data-grab-targeting-snap-recipients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/nycpolitics\/20-states-led-by-new-york-and-california-sue-trump-administration-over-illegal-data-grab-targeting-snap-recipients\/","title":{"rendered":"20 States, Led by New York and California, Sue Trump Administration Over \u2018Illegal Data Grab\u2019 Targeting SNAP Recipients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A coalition of 20 states and Washington, D.C. announced Monday they are suing the Trump administration to stop what they call an \u201cillegal data grab\u201d targeting food stamp recipients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, challenges a demand by the <\/span><b>U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for personal information about all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients going back five years, including Social Security numbers, immigration status, marital history, and education levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>California Attorney General Rob Bonta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called the USDA\u2019s sweeping data request unprecedented and in violation of federal privacy laws. <\/span><b>New York Attorney General Letitia James<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went further, calling it a direct attack on immigrant communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWeaponizing the SNAP Program\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey are basically trying to weaponize the SNAP program against immigrant communities in violation of the law,\u201d James said. \u201cWe will not allow this life-saving program to be illegally used to hunt down immigrants and their families.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James said the request was not about program oversight, but about using the SNAP system to boost deportation numbers. Last week, she filed a separate lawsuit over federal efforts to bar undocumented immigrants from accessing emergency social services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connecticut and New Jersey are also among the states expected to join the lawsuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USDA Silent, DOJ Declines Comment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USDA, which issued the initial request in May and added more data categories in documents last week, deferred questions to the Department of Justice. DOJ officials declined to comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USDA has previously said the data request stems from an executive order by <\/span><b>President Donald Trump<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aimed at eliminating \u201cwaste, fraud, and abuse\u201d in federal programs. States were given until July 30 to comply or risk losing funding, unless a judge delays enforcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broader Pattern of Surveillance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lawsuit comes amid revelations that the Trump administration expanded data-sharing with immigration enforcement agencies. ICE has already begun accessing Medicaid records to identify undocumented immigrants, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-medicaid-trump-ice-ab9c2267ce596089410387bfcb40eeb7?taid=68792317ae8665000187bb75\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though undocumented people are ineligible for Medicaid, they may access Emergency Medicaid for lifesaving ER care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNAP serves nearly 3 million people in New York state, including 1.8 million in New York City, with half a million children among the recipients.
