Former New York Gov. <\/span>Andrew Cuomo<\/b><\/a> confirmed on July 14 that he will continue his campaign for New York City mayor, just weeks after losing the Democratic primary to progressive State Assemblyman <\/span>Zohran Mamdani<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m in it to win it,” Cuomo declared in a <\/span>post on X<\/span><\/a>, signaling his decision to move forward as an independent candidate in the general election.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Frontrunner to Underdog<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cuomo, once the dominant figure in New York politics, stepped down as governor in 2021 following a wave of sexual harassment allegations. Despite that cloud, his deep political connections made him an early favorite in the Democratic mayoral primary. But 33-year-old Mamdani surged late, fueled by a progressive platform that focused on housing affordability, public safety reform, and economic equity.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a sharply worded social media post Monday, Cuomo took aim at his opponent. \u201cWe need a city with lower rent, safer streets, where buying your first home is once again possible, where childcare won\u2019t bankrupt you,\u201d he said. \u201cYou deserve a mayor with the experience and ideas to make it happen again \u2014 and the guts to take on anyone who stands in the way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuomo also acknowledged criticisms that his campaign lacked presence in the lead-up to the primary. \u201cEvery day I\u2019m going to be hitting the streets\u2026 because for the next few months it\u2019s my responsibility to earn your vote. So let\u2019s do this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Running as an Independent<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cuomo is expected to appear on the November ballot under the \u201cFight and Deliver\u201d party \u2014 a political line he created earlier this year in anticipation of possibly needing a non-Democratic path. While he conceded to Mamdani on primary night, it remained unclear whether he\u2019d stay in the race until now.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his concession, Cuomo praised Mamdani\u2019s campaign as “highly impactful” and acknowledged his strong support among young voters. But Monday\u2019s announcement showed Cuomo isn’t ready to walk away from public life \u2014 or from a fight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mamdani Fires Back<\/span><\/h2>\n

Mamdani, for his part, wasted no time responding. \u201cWhile Andrew Cuomo and <\/span>Eric Adams<\/b><\/a> trip over each other to win the approval of billionaires in backrooms, our campaign remains focused on working New Yorkers,\u201d he <\/span>posted on X<\/span><\/a>. Mamdani also poked fun at Cuomo, accusing him of mimicking his social media tactics after footage emerged of Cuomo filming a campaign-style video in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Democratic nominee\u2019s campaign has leaned heavily into grassroots messaging and has attempted to position him as the candidate of everyday people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crowded Field, Uncertain Outcome<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cuomo joins a general election race that already includes Mamdani, current Mayor Eric Adams \u2014 who is also running a third-party bid \u2014 and former federal prosecutor <\/span>Jim Walden<\/b>, also running as an independent. Guardian Angels founder <\/span>Curtis Sliwa<\/b> is the Republican nominee.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the city\u2019s deep Democratic leanings, Mamdani\u2019s opponents hope to rally around a more moderate challenger in the fall. Former Gov. <\/span>David Paterson<\/b> has even called for the field to consolidate behind whoever is most likely to defeat Mamdani.<\/span><\/p>\n
