The founding basis of this country, the social, political, cultural context of this country, is slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kanakamedala began working with the <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bklynlibrary.org\/center-for-brooklyn-history?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.bklynlibrary.org\/center-for-brooklyn-history\">Center for Brooklyn History<\/a> on a public history project about Brooklyn\u2019s anti-slavery movement called <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/pursuitoffreedom.org\/?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/pursuitoffreedom.org\/\">In Pursuit Of Freedom<\/a> in 2010. Several years ago, she decided to turn her work on the project into a book and found additional sources for information at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. and Yale University.<\/p>\n<p>From its first European settlements by the Dutch in the 17th century, Brooklyn developed separately from Manhattan and remained its own city until 1898. Unlike Boston and Philadelphia, Brooklyn\u2019s enslaved population began\u00a0to grow after the American Revolution, mostly due to its agricultural terrain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDutch and British farmers were willing to hold onto that agrarian economy so much longer. And of course, they needed unfree [enslaved] laborers to do that work,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure figure-l\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3842361\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/featured-news\/brooklynitesbook.jpg;w=960\" alt=\"brooklynitesbook\" \/><figcaption>&#8220;Brooklynites: The remarkable story of the free Black communities that shaped a Borough&#8221;. Photo: Supplied\/NYU Press.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Slavery in Brooklyn slowly began\u00a0to fade with the Gradual Emancipation Law of 1799, and on July 4, 1827, slavery officially ended\u00a0across New York State. But even before that, free Black communities were organizing in the city.<\/p>\n<p>None of the slaves in Brooklyn were waiting for slavery to officially end in 1827. By 1808, many people were creating institutions and ways of living in which they can create Black joy and thrive in, according to Kanakamedala.<\/p>\n<p>Kanakamadela&#8217;s book is structured around four prominent families: the Crogers, the Hodges, the Wilsons and the Gloucesters. These Black families started mutual aid organizations, founded churches, built real estate portfolios and supported abolitionist causes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think free Black communities have so many lessons to teach us about the ways in which we still think of our neighborhoods today about what our neighborhoods need,\u201d said Kanakamedala.<\/p>\n<p>Little physical remnants of these communities still exist today, with a few exceptions. The Hunterfly Road Houses at the <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weeksvillesociety.org\/?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.weeksvillesociety.org\/\">Weeksville Heritage Center<\/a>, which were built in the mid-19th century, still stand today. The <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bklynlibrary.org\/digitalcollections\/item\/37360348-a9b0-45af-8516-0780e8337cbb?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.bklynlibrary.org\/digitalcollections\/item\/37360348-a9b0-45af-8516-0780e8337cbb\">original fa\u00e7ade <\/a>of the <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgestreetbrooklyn.org\/?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"http:\/\/www.bridgestreetbrooklyn.org\/\">Bridge Street AME Church<\/a>, built in 1847, is located in Downtown Brooklyn and is <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/engineering.nyu.edu\/170-years-of-engineering\/wunsch-hall?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/engineering.nyu.edu\/170-years-of-engineering\/wunsch-hall\">a part of <\/a>the New York University&#8217;s Tandon School of Engineering. The church still exists today and is located in Bedford Stuyvesant.<\/p>\n<p>Kanakamedala\u2019s next project is a family biography of the DeGrasse family, a Black family who was central to Black politics in Manhattan in the early 19th century.
