The first of several community planning workshops on the future of the\u00a0Brooklyn Marine Terminal<\/a>\u00a0occurred on Saturday, where residents chimed in on the multi-million dollar rebuild that looks to build a modern port and a mixed-use community on the Red Hook waterfront.<\/p>\n

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC), Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul in May\u00a0announced the revitalization<\/a>\u00a0plan for the 122-acre industrial space that stretches from 29th to 39th Streets. The project, overseen by the EDC, will rebuild the waterfront area into a modern maritime port, add a mixed-use community and repair Piers 7-12.<\/p>\n

So far, the project has secured a $164 million grant from the Department of Transportation matched by another $95 million from the city and state,\u00a0according to the EDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mikelle Adgate, EDC senior vice president of Government and Community Relations, said the city\u2019s\u00a0Blue Highways<\/a>\u00a0proposal incentivizes shipping companies to utilize barges instead of using trucks.<\/p>\n

Jim Wright, an architect based in Manhattan, said the proposal sounded like it would create a robust, interconnected freight network.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis site has the potential to be the port of the future for New York City,\u201d Wright said.<\/p>\n

Wright stressed that food could be a major product that can be transported from the new marine terminal. The architect mentioned that Hunt\u2019s Point, the city\u2019s biggest food distribution point,\u00a0did not currently utilize<\/a>\u00a0maritime shipping methods.<\/p>\n

Wright added that the city could cut down on truck traffic by utilizing maritime shipping from Hunt\u2019s Point to \u201csecondary centers\u201d along the Blue Highway to bring food \u201ccloser to the final market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, another aspect of the project proposal is to build a mixed-use community which could including residential units. Adgate said housing is \u201cone of the opportunities that could be\u201d incorporated as part of the project, but so far, \u201cno decisions have been made.\u201d<\/p>\n

George Ostrow, a resident of Red Hook, was concerned that the EDC\u2019s housing proposals \u201cwill focus on whatever makes the most money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to make a huge investment, they are going to have to get their money back from it,\u201d Ostrow said, referring to the city and a housing developer.\u00a0\u201cAnd if their analysis says luxury condos, waterfront condos, like you see up river, then that\u2019s what we are going to get\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter what the people say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cobble Hill resident Amy Breedlove said any new housing to be built should be supportive housing, or for those who are homeless and\/or were formerly incarcerated, not luxury condominium\u00a0units.<\/p>\n

Ostrow said he was \u201ccynical\u201d of public input sessions like this.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just a very token, check the box, \u2018Yeah, we had a public input session,\u2019 but it\u2019s not going to mean anything at all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Adgate disagreed with Ostrow\u2019s assessment, contending that it is \u201cabsolutely critical\u201d to have community input.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of these stakeholders can come and learn more about this site that they may have not had access to in the past,\u201d Adgate said.<\/p>\n

Trequan Bekka, the internship coordinator for the nonprofit\u00a0Good Shepherd Services<\/a>, said he hoped the poject would provide opportunities to\u00a0connect\u00a0high school studdents\u00a0and recent graduates with job training and services.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s very important that when we have opportunities like this, as big as this, that we use it to capitalize on progressing communities that may have struggled with poverty,\u201d Bekka said.<\/p>\n

Breedlove also said rising sea levels were concerning, and how it would impact the fixing of the terminal\u2019s piers.<\/p>\n

The EDC will hold their next public\u00a0workshop<\/a>\u00a0on Oct. 7 at Sacred Hearts and St. Stephens Parish, 125 Summit St., at 6:00pm.<\/p>\n
