{"id":2192,"date":"2024-06-20T00:26:57","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T04:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/multi.nycnewsnetwork.com\/nycpolitics\/?p=2192"},"modified":"2024-06-20T00:26:57","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T04:26:57","slug":"mayor-adams-recommends-cooling-centers-to-beat-heat-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/nycpolitics\/mayor-adams-recommends-cooling-centers-to-beat-heat-wave\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Adams Recommends Cooling Centers to Beat Heat Wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkreader.com\/writers\/tisserashenal\">Shenal Tissera<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New York City Mayor Eric Adams asked all New Yorkers to stay vigilant during the heat wave, addressed a recent spike in gun violence in Brownsville and supported the possibility of a mask ban\u00a0on subways.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor said the city will open up\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/finder.nyc.gov\/coolingcenters\/\" rel=\"noopener\">cooling centers<\/a>\u00a0across the city on Tuesday\u00a0in preparation for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkreader.com\/in-other-brooklyn-news\/heat-wave-around-nyc-expected-to-start-tuesday-9095189\">heat wave<\/a>. He encouraged people to sign up for\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/a858-nycnotify.nyc.gov\/notifynyc\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Notify NYC<\/a>, the city\u2019s free emergency notification system, during his regular press briefing at City Hall on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want people to really be conscious,&#8221; about the heat, the mayor said. Combined with the humidity, temperatures could feel like it is above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/p>\n<p>Zach Iscol, commissioner of New York City Emergency Management, said the worst looks to be on Thursday and Friday, as he cautioned residents to keep tabs on the heat index.<\/p>\n<p>Adams also offered resolute support for a ban on wearing masks in the subway, a\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/ny-governors-subway-mask-ban-proposal-sparks-debate-111140483\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal floated by New York Governor Kathy Hochul<\/a>\u00a0in her attempt to combat what she has described\u00a0as antisemitic acts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m a strong supporter of the decision of stopping masks on our subway system, masks in protests, masks in other areas where it&#8217;s not health related,\u201d said Adams. \u201cI believe the governor is in the right place and I strongly support it and I hope we get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"details-body\" class=\"details-body clearfix\" data-words=\"599\">\n<p>Hochul did not make clear the exact details of the plan, nor the incident that spurred her to potentially go forward with such legislation,\u00a0but gave assurances that there will be exemptions for health, cultural or religious reasons.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about gun violence in Brownsville, where there&#8217;s been about\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/brooklyn-neighborhood-gun-violence-73rd-precinct\/\" rel=\"noopener\">30 shootings<\/a>\u00a0within the 73rd Precinct borders and most recently on Saturday where two older residents got caught in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkreader.com\/in-other-brooklyn-news\/two-people-injured-in-brownsville-shooting-9091585\">crossfire<\/a>\u00a0of a shooting, the mayor said he was alarmed to find out from his staff that many young people under the age of 21 are in possession of, and are using,\u00a0guns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our focus is to continue to look at\u00a0what&#8217;s\u00a0happening there. Is this gang-driven?\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0what we believe it is, and to really respond to it accordingly like\u00a0we&#8217;ve\u00a0done throughout the city,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Too many guns on our streets, too many repeated offenders are armed with these weapons, and some of the targets were innocent people. That is why we\u00a0have to\u00a0take a\u00a0real close\u00a0look at what are we doing with recidivism and repeated offenders that are carrying guns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mayor also addressed questions about the increase in rent\u00a0for rent stabilized apartments, which was approved by the\u00a0New York City Rent Guidelines Board after the weekly press conference on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the board, where all members are\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/rentguidelinesboard.cityofnewyork.us\/about\/board-staff\/\" rel=\"noopener\">appointed by the mayor<\/a>, voted to increase rent by\u00a02.75% for one-year leases and 5.25% for two-year leases. The rent hikes are set to kick in during the fall.<\/p>\n<p>Adams noted \u201cthe rent is too damn high,\u201d and hoped for the increase to come in on the lower threshold set for the vote. For one-year leases, the minimum increase proposed was 2% and for two-year leases, it was 4%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful for the board\u2019s careful consideration of the data and their decision to limit increases this year,\u201d said Adams in a statement released after the board vote. \u201cAs we have said from day one, the only way to ultimately lower rents is to build more housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The board has voted for rent increases\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/rentguidelinesboard.cityofnewyork.us\/2022-23-apartment-loft-order-54\/\" rel=\"noopener\">every year<\/a>\u00a0since Adams assumed office in January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInflation is real\u2026What $100 bought me a little while ago.
