The city is seeing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/manhattan\/million-fewer-cars-nyc-opinion-congestion-pricing\/6138487\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">250,000 fewer cars on the roads each week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and more pedestrians on the roads \u2013 a huge plus for local businesses. Still, not everyone seems happy with the new changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Overview Of NYC\u2019s Congestion Pricing Program<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYC has been consistently ranked as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-25\/nyc-has-the-world-s-worst-traffic-congestion-costing-9-billion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the worst place in the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for traffic. It costs the city up to $9 billion each year in lost time, with the average commuter wasting 101 hours in 2023 alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To tackle the problem, Governor Kathy Hochul introduced the first congestion pricing plan nationwide last month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most drivers who want to drive through the city\u2019s \u201cCongestion Relief Zone\u201d during peak hours (5AM-9PM on weekdays, 9AM-9PM on weekends) need to pay a $9 toll before crossing. If you\u2019re driving through outside peak time, you\u2019ll pay $2.25 to cross through. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-congestion-pricing-what-to-know\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other vehicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like trucks, motorcycles, or taxis will have their own toll prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which Roads Fall Under Congestion Pricing?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything under 60th street will fall under Manhattan\u2019s Congestion Relief Zone. It includes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lincoln Tunnel\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williamsburg Bridge\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hugh L. Carey Tunnel\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queensborough Bridge\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhattan Bridge\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holland Tunnel<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brooklyn Bridge\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a driver\u2019s coming from Upper Manhattan or the Bronx, they\u2019ll need to pay once they get to 60th street. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/tolls\/congestion-relief-zone\/discounts-exemptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain exemptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and discounts are also\u00a0 available for certain drivers, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergency vehicles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who make an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $60,000 or less\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public buses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School buses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drivers with disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/tolls\/congestion-relief-zone\/discounts-exemptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn more about how you can apply and take advantage of these exemptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Congestion Pricing Affects Local Businesses\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congestion pricing has already been showing positive results. There\u2019s been a 7.5% reduction in car traffic. Traffic is flowing faster, accidents are less frequent, and foot traffic went up by 1.5 million. For many pedestrians, less cars around is encouraging them to explore local shops and take in more of what the city has to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCongesting pricing is working exactly as intended \u2013 with faster commutes, cleaner air, and even more business activity in the congestion relief zone,\u201d said Ben Furnas, Executive Director at Transportation Alternatives in a previous statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Congestion Pricing Here To Stay?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time will tell if the results outweigh the costs. So far, congestion pricing is here to stay for now. The effects have largely been positive on our community. Besides making the city\u2019s streets cleaner and safer, local businesses have a golden opportunity to attract more customers to their doors.
