Brooklyn resident Charlene Kaye loves her mom dearly, but that didn’t stop the musician, actor and comedian from turning their tumultuous relationship\u00a0into comedy.<\/p>\n

In a 60-minute one-woman\u00a0show entitled,\u00a0Tiger Daughter: Or, How I Brought My Immigrant Mother Ultimate Shame<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Kaye details– through much laughter–\u00a0all the emotional highs and lows her mother has put her through.<\/p>\n

Some high points of Kaye\u2019s show include when her mother Lily Kaye, who is Chinese Singaporean, asks her daughter to photoshop her face into an image of a Chinese empress. Or when her mom commissions nude portraits of herself to display at home. Or when she sends her daughter dating profiles of eligible men, except they are teenagers and married guys.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom is the Asian Anna Wintour, as well as the world\u2019s most terrible dating app,\u201d said Kaye.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the low, or when her mom reveals in an interview that she thinks Kaye is spoiled and entitled because she has put all her energy into pursuing music and the arts.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, there\u2019s the typical Asian phenomenon of never getting to please your mom,\u201d Kaye, 38, said. \u201cBut it\u2019s rough when you\u2019ve disappointed her by just being myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show, however, is a comical homage to her courageous and outrageous mother. As Kaye splices personal stories about her family with a PowerPoint presentation, she grapples with why her mother doesn\u2019t understand her and why she needs her approval so much.<\/p>\n

Kaye, who grew up in Hawaii, Singapore, Hong Kong and Arizona and went to college in Michigan, said she always knew she wanted to be in the arts. After graduating from college, she moved to Prospect Heights in 2010.<\/p>\n

After releasing an EP in 2010, Kaye released a solo record\u00a0Animal Love\u00a0<\/em>in 2012,\u00a0<\/em>which received critical praise. The glam rock\/pop musician was also part of San Fermin, an indie rock collective, before going solo again under the moniker KAYE.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy music has always been theatrical,\u201d said Kaye, who was part of a group called Guns N\u2019 Hoses, an all-female Guns N\u2019 Roses cover band.<\/p>\n

Once the pandemic hit, Kaye said she was hungry to learn another art form, so she took an online acting class at\u00a0William Esper Studio<\/a>. There, she trained under Jennifer Monaco, who helped her shape her stories about her mother into the current show. (Monaco is now the director of Tiger Daughter.)<\/p>\n

There was a time when Kaye didn\u2019t think an Asian woman could make it as a musician or actor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, who was an Asian female musician supposed to look up to? Cassandra Wong from Wayne\u2019s World?\u201d Kaye repeated a joke that is also part of the show, referring to Mike Meyer\u2019s love interest in the movie played by actress Tia Carrere.<\/p>\n

Now she\u2019s been trying her hand at stand-up\u00a0and performs two to three times a week, including at\u00a0Littlefield<\/a>\u00a0in Gowanus or\u00a0Union Hall<\/a>\u00a0in Park Slope.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the occasional book store,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn’s independent comedy scene has been welcoming, Kaye said as she tries to find her voice. She is thinking about combining music with comedy, something she has already showcased on Instagram with her\u00a0viral posts<\/a> breaking down the music stylings of Taylor Swift and Charlie XCX.<\/p>\n

These posts caught the attention of comedian and actress Margaret Cho, who invited her to\u00a0perform\u00a0<\/a>at The\u00a0Public Theater–\u00a0part of a residency where she is curating shows at the storied Manhattan theater.<\/p>\n

In addition, Kaye will play an Asian rock musician\u00a0in the upcoming film\u00a0Ron Forever<\/a>, and helped her sister Liann Kaye, a filmmaker,\u00a0score her films\u00a0The Blessing<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Seoul Switch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although Kaye said she has \u201ctried to move to L.A.,\u201d she keeps gravitating towards Brooklyn because there\u2019s a density of artists doing all kinds of work, keeping her intrigued and on her toes.<\/p>\n

As for her mother\u2019s approval on her career trajectory, Kaye thinks things are starting to look up:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt helps when family friends start calling and texting my mom when they hear about what I\u2019m doing,\u201d Kaye said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing like that Asian auntie validation that makes a mom proud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaye will be at\u00a0Joe\u2019s Pub\u00a0<\/a>at the Public Theater on Oct. 24 and 25. She will also be performing at\u00a0Dynasty Typewriter\u00a0<\/a>in Los Angeles on Nov. 22.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
