Tatham stands as a powerful example of strength in action. Her journey, from growing up in Brownsville to serving on the bench as a Civil Court Judge and aspiring Supreme Court Justice, reflects the very essence of perseverance, leadership, and service that Women\u2019s History Month celebrates.<\/p>\n

For\u00a0Beverly S. Tatham, strength is not something she talks about, it\u2019s something she lives.<\/p>\n

From the courtrooms of Brooklyn to the communities of Brownsville where she was raised, Judge Tatham\u2019s life has been defined by perseverance, service, and an unshakable sense of purpose. As a Civil Court Judge with aspirations to serve as a New York State Supreme Court Justice, her journey reflects not only professional excellence, but a deeply personal story of resilience.<\/p>\n

She is also a three-time cancer survivor.<\/p>\n

And yet, that is only one chapter in a life built on overcoming, giving back, and continuing forward, no matter the challenge.<\/p>\n

Rooted in Brooklyn, Guided by Purpose<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Born and raised in Brownsville by an immigrant single mother, Judge Tatham\u2019s foundation was shaped early by discipline, curiosity, and a desire to understand fairness. That curiosity would later become a driving force in her legal career, one centered on asking not just what the law says, but how it impacts people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

She went on to attend St. John\u2019s University, earning a degree in Paralegal Studies, before obtaining her Juris Doctor from Touro Law School. During her time in law school, she worked directly with low-income residents and immigrant women navigating family court matters, including domestic violence cases, experiences that would leave a lasting impact on her approach to justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always believed that understanding people\u2019s stories matters,\u201d she has shared in reflecting on her work. \u201cThe law is important, but so is the human experience behind every case.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Career Built on Advocacy and Experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Before taking the bench, Judge Tatham spent nearly two decades as a trial attorney, representing clients in both state and federal courts. Her work spanned litigation, mediation, arbitration, and settlement negotiations, building a comprehensive understanding of the legal system from multiple angles.<\/p>\n

That depth of experience now informs her work as a Civil Court Judge, where she is responsible for making decisions that can significantly impact individuals, families, and communities.<\/p>\n

Her approach is grounded in fairness, independence, and careful listening, qualities that have become hallmarks of her judicial philosophy.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery decision carries weight,\u201d she has said. \u201cYou have to be thoughtful, you have to be fair, and you have to remember what\u2019s at stake for the people involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy faith has carried me through some of the most difficult moments in my life,\u201d says Tatham. \u201cIt reminds me that there is always purpose, even in the hardest seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her resilience is not something she separates from her professional life, it is something that shapes how she shows up every day.<\/p>\n

Mentorship, Service, and Community Impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Beyond the courtroom, Judge Tatham has spent more than 20 years mentoring young women across Brooklyn. Through leadership programs, educational initiatives, and community engagement, she has helped create spaces where young women can grow, find their voices, and see themselves as future leaders.<\/p>\n

She has also organized community conversations, supported initiatives addressing women\u2019s health and social equity, and worked with numerous local organizations to expand access to resources and opportunity.<\/p>\n

For her, service is not separate from her career, it is central to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeadership is about lifting others as you move forward,\u201d she has said. \u201cIf we\u2019re not creating opportunities for the next generation, we\u2019re missing the bigger picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead: A Natural Next Step<\/strong><\/h2>\n

With her extensive legal experience, deep community ties, and demonstrated leadership, Judge Tatham sees serving as a Supreme Court Justice as a natural next step in her journey.<\/p>\n

Her career has prepared her not only to interpret the law, but to do so with wisdom, balance, and an understanding of the communities she serves.<\/p>\n

When asked about the possibility of moving up to Supreme Court, Tatham told us, \u201cI\u2019ve dedicated my life to service.\u00a0 Continuing that work at the highest level would be an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n
