{"id":3201,"date":"2024-09-10T06:07:28","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T10:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/multi.nycnewsnetwork.com\/healthynyc\/?p=3201"},"modified":"2024-09-10T06:07:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T10:07:28","slug":"report-flags-safety-issues-in-city-parks-bathrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/healthynyc\/report-flags-safety-issues-in-city-parks-bathrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"Report Flags Safety Issues in City Parks Bathrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York City Council on Thursday\u00a0launched\u00a0an\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/sites\/56\/2024\/09\/090424_Speaker-AdamsParks-BathroomReport-ALT-Design_v51.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a>\u00a0into the cleanliness, conditions, functionality, safety\u00a0and accessibility of 102 public restrooms within New York City parks.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation, led by the Council\u2019s Oversight and Investigation Division, found that two-thirds of inspected restrooms\u00a0were closed or found to have health or safety issues, according to a press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a topic that gets discussed often, but never resolved,\u201d said\u00a0Council Member Gale A. Brewer,\u00a0Chair of the Committee on Oversight and Investigation. \u201cMany of the restrooms would benefit greatly from simple fixes, such as replacing sinks or toilets. Others need much more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Among the persistent issues observed were the prevalence of litter in 40% of restrooms and unsanitary conditions in 23%\u00a0of restrooms. Additionally, there was a lack of garbage cans in 30%\u00a0of the locations visited, and only 8% of restrooms had menstrual product bins.<\/p>\n<div id=\"details-body\" class=\"details-body clearfix\" data-words=\"355\">\n<p>The inconsistent availability of required amenities in Parks bathrooms was notable, with nearly one in four restrooms missing baby changing stations. The survey found 30% of men&#8217;s restrooms lacked baby changing stations, while 17% of women&#8217;s restrooms did not have them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic bathrooms, just like paved roads, schools, or fire stations, are critical infrastructure for New York City families,\u201d said\u00a0Council Member Shekar Krishnan,\u00a0Chair of the Committee on Parks and Recreation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the City Council&#8217;s own inspections of park bathrooms across the five boroughs frequently found broken locks, empty toilet paper holders, and wet, dirty floors. The solution to this mess is clear: to provide the safe, clean public bathrooms that New Yorkers deserve, we need to stop cutting and start investing in our NYC Parks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accessibility, functionality and amenities were major concerns of the investigation. Nearly 9% of the restrooms were closed during scheduled hours, while one in every nine stalls inspected by Council staff lacked functioning locks.<\/p>\n<p>Lack of amenities like\u00a030% of restrooms not having\u00a0a garbage can,\u00a010% percent of restrooms not having\u00a0soap, and 13% of stalls not having toilet paper, affected the overall cleanliness.<\/p>\n<p>Health and safety concerns included\u00a0litter in 40% of\u00a0all restrooms and\u00a023% of restrooms having\u00a0unsanitary conditions, such as bodily fluids on surfaces.
