The event will take place on Saturday, June 8\u00a0at the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weeksvillesociety.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Weeksvile Heritage Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s event will begin with a bike ride at 9am, followed by the festival starting at 11am, which includes blood tests for prostate cancer. Attendees can also expect live music from a DJ and food from\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/auntsetuncles.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Aunts et Uncles<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/brooklyntea.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn Tea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to give Black men something where they would walk in feeling that they were being supported and uplifted and walk out feeling like they were poured into,\u201d said Christopher Williams, founder of Heart, Body &amp; Soul. \u201cI wanted to connect people with access to resources that they normally wouldn&#8217;t have access to.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure figure-l\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3658563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/featured-news\/screenshot-2024-06-05-at-80610-am.png;w=960\" alt=\"screenshot-2024-06-05-at-80610-am\" width=\"480\" height=\"642\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heart, Body &amp; Soul founder Christopher Williams. Photo: Supplied\/Toni Dubois, Heart, Body &amp; Soul.<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>Williams, the publisher\u00a0of\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/gowhereitzat.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">WhereItzAt Magazine<\/a>, founded Heart Body &amp; Soul\u00a0after facing serious health challenges himself. In October 2015, at the age of 42, Williams suffered his first heart attack. Young and in good physical shape, the heart attack came as a shock.\u201cI didn&#8217;t want to tell anyone because it was a scary thing for me,\u201d said\u00a0Williams. \u201cSo, I kept it very quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More health issues followed in September of 2021 when he went to the emergency room for what he thought was appendicitis, but later learned was Stage 3 appendiceal cancer, a rare type of cancer of the appendix. While awaiting surgery, Williams suffered a second heart attack in October of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>These compounding health challenges inspired Williams to spread awareness about the health disparities faced by Black men. He founded Heart, Body &amp; Soul in 2022 and launched the Black Man\u2019s Health Festival the same year as the nonprofit&#8217;s\u00a0flagship event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides my own health issues, there were friends of mine who were struggling, who had experienced some really tragic diagnoses and were suffering in silence,\u201d said Williams.<\/p>\n<p>Williams hopes the festival will be a platform for Black men to feel comfortable to talk about the things that they were dealing with, and learn how they can advocate for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2022\/20220831.htm#:~:text=That%20decline%20%E2%80%93%2077.0%20to%2076.1,life%20expectancy%20since%201921%2D1923\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 report<\/a>\u00a0from National Vital Statistics System\u00a0puts\u00a0the life expectancy for Black men at\u00a066.7 years, compared to the overall life expectancy of 76.1 years. White men have a life expectancy of 73.7 years, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/minorityhealth\/lcod\/men\/2018\/nonhispanic-black\/index.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention<\/a>, heart disease, which refers to several types of heart conditions including coronary artery disease and heart attack, is the leading cause of death for Black men in the U.S., making up 24% of deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had two heart attacks, so I&#8217;m labeled as having coronary artery disease,\u201d said Williams. \u201cIt is preventable, it&#8217;s treatable. We don&#8217;t have to die from this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond physical health, Williams emphasized\u00a0the importance of mental health awareness.
