Brooklyn community stakeholders on Friday celebrated the May launch of the Brooklyn Youth Offshore Wind Training program, a workforce development initiative for\u00a0New\u00a0York\u2019s\u00a0offshore wind industry<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0Brownsville Community Culinary Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Citizens Financial Group said it would provide a $600,000, two-year grant\u00a0to help launch the program, available for 72 Brownsville youth, aged 15-24, to gain certification and hands-on experience for\u00a0green energy jobs.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0program will provide safety certification, hands-on training, paid internships\u00a0and swimming lessons starting this summer.<\/p>\n

The program is organized by the\u00a0Central Brooklyn Economic Development Corp. (CBEDC)<\/a>,\u00a0in partnership with the\u00a0National Wind Service Corp.<\/a>\u00a0(NWS) and\u00a0Local Initiatives Support Corporation New York<\/a>\u00a0(LISC NY).<\/a><\/p>\n

The program kicks off\u00a0in Brownsville, where\u00a0La\u2019Shawn\u00a0Allen-Muhammad, executive director of CBEDC, was raised.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs someone born in this community, it is a blessing to work with purpose and on purpose about giving back to the community that has given me so much,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

CBEDC and NWS will administer the program, develop the curriculum, hire instructors and provide counselors and other support services. Students will begin with a 15-week after-school preparatory program before they advance into an intensive seven-week paid summer internship.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Rachel Mattes Greenberg, the head of sustainability at Citizens,\u00a0told BK\u00a0Reader that the financial institution\u00a0is focused on supporting the communities where they operate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0going to focus on upskilling the youth of Brownsville to be ready for the jobs of the future, the jobs associated with the offshore wind industry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Valerie White, senior\u00a0executive director of LISC NY,\u00a0said the new program will allow the youth of Brownsville to access technology, training, and have a potential career in the\u00a0offshore wind industry<\/a>, “which is the future of energy in the U.S.,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlack and Brown communities have been the last communities to have access to new industries as they have emerged,” White added. “This\u00a0program allows the establishment of access to happen immediately, so\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0prepared to be part of the pipeline to support the\u00a0industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marjaneh Issapour, chief executive officer of National Wind Services\u00a0Corp., said some gradates may have opportunities to become wind turbine technicians.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore all the offshore opportunities are here, they can get employment in adjacent industries to offshore wind, like construction, [or as an] electrician\u00a0and welder. My\u00a0hope is a more diverse, inclusive industry than the fossil fuels industry has been,” she said.<\/p>\n

Sidda Philip, the program director of Youth Workforce Services at Bridge Street\u00a0Development, who attended the event, said she would be looking to see how the program can be replicated in Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights.<\/p>\n
