Physical activity can include working, exercising, performing household chores, and leisure-time activities such as walking, tennis, hiking, bicycling, and swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Physical activity is essential for people to maintain a balance between the number of\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000044651&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">calories<\/a>\u00a0consumed and the number of calories used. Consistently expending fewer calories than are consumed leads to\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000527371&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">obesity<\/a>, which scientists have convincingly linked to increased risks of 13 different cancers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r1\">1<\/a>). Additionally, evidence indicates that physical activity may reduce the risks of several cancers through other mechanisms, independent of its effect on obesity.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- East New York --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1341283317876058\" data-ad-slot=\"3847248207\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<h2>What is known about the relationship between physical activity and cancer risk?<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>There is substantial evidence that higher levels of physical activity are linked to lower risks of several cancers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r2\">2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Colon cancer:\u00a0<\/strong><a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000044237&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">Colon cancer<\/a>\u00a0is one of the most extensively studied cancers in relation to physical activity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r3\">3<\/a>). A 2009\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000691484&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">meta-analysis<\/a>\u00a0of 52\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000257225&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">epidemiologic studies<\/a>\u00a0that examined the association between physical activity and colon cancer risk found that the most physically active individuals had a 24% lower risk of colon cancer than those who were the least physically active (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r4\">4<\/a>). A pooled analysis of data on leisure-time physical activity (activities done at an individual\u2019s discretion generally to improve or maintain fitness or health) from 12\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000044079&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">prospective<\/a>\u00a0U.S. and European\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000285673&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">cohort studies<\/a>\u00a0reported a risk reduction of 16%, when comparing individuals who were most active to those where least active (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r5\">5<\/a>).\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000046145&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">Incidence<\/a>\u00a0of both\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000735326&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">distal colon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000735328&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">proximal colon<\/a>\u00a0cancers is lower in people who are more physically active than in those who are less physically active (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r6\">6<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r7\">7<\/a>). Physical activity is also associated with a decreased risk of colon\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000046217&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">adenomas<\/a>\u00a0(polyps), a type of\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000044657&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">colon polyp<\/a>\u00a0that may develop into colon cancer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/physical-activity-fact-sheet#r8\">8<\/a>).
