Rep. Mike Lawler has decided not to pursue a high-profile campaign for New York governor and will instead aim for a third term in Congress, as he confirmed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Lawler Steps Aside from Gubernatorial Bid<\/strong>
The Republican from the Hudson Valley, whose congressional seat is fiercely contested, shared on Fox & Friends<\/a> that despite his view that Gov. Kathy Hochul is \u201cthe worst governor in America,\u201d he feels that \u201cthe right choice for myself, my family, and my district is to run for reelection.\u201d<\/p>\n

This decision, initially covered by The New York Times<\/a>, potentially smooths Rep. Elise Stefanik\u2019s path to capture the GOP nomination for governor in 2026, as she may not face a primary battle with Lawler. Stefanik commended Lawler as \u201ca great, effective and hardworking\u201d legislator and noted she will determine her own plans after the November elections.<\/p>\n

Previously seen as a leading Republican contender for statewide office, Lawler\u2014a moderate known for his pragmatic, media-savvy approach\u2014recently trailed behind Stefanik and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in GOP primary polling.<\/p>\n

Republican Concerns and Trump\u2019s Support<\/strong>
Lawler\u2019s district, narrowly carried by President Joe Biden in 2020, is now a top spot for Democrats to target as they seek to regain the House majority. No fewer than seven Democrats are pursuing a run against him. Lawler underscored the strategic importance of his seat, stating, \u201cMy seat was determinative of control of the House back in 2022 and again in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Lawler\u2019s reelection on Truth Social<\/a> in May, calling him a \u201cTrue America First Patriot.\u201d Lawler rejected the idea that Trump\u2019s endorsement was a factor in backing away from the gubernatorial race, telling POLITICO<\/a>, \u201cUltimately, my decision is going to be my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democrats React Swiftly<\/strong>
Democrats quickly framed Lawler\u2019s move as capitulation. \u201cMike Lawler caving to Donald Trump before his campaign even starts proves he\u2019s too weak to take on Governor Hochul \u2014 and he knows it,\u201d said State Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs.<\/p>\n

Gov. Hochul also criticized Lawler on social media, stating, \u201cThis is the same Mike Lawler who caved to Trump the minute he asked to rip away New Yorkers\u2019 health care.\u201d She added, he \u201cdoesn\u2019t have the spine to face me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hochul, who faces moderate approval figures but boasts significant campaign resources, has amassed $17.5 million for her re-election.
