{"id":10157,"date":"2024-08-13T04:38:33","date_gmt":"2024-08-13T08:38:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/multi.nycnewsnetwork.com\/eastnewyork\/?p=10157"},"modified":"2024-12-28T07:55:56","modified_gmt":"2024-12-28T12:55:56","slug":"flatbush-residents-speak-out-on-preservation-of-african-burial-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/eastnewyork\/flatbush-residents-speak-out-on-preservation-of-african-burial-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"Flatbush Residents Speak Out on Preservation of African Burial Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkreader.com\/writers\/christopher.edwards28%40gmail.com\">Christopher Edwards<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Flatbush residents on Saturday were given the chance to share their ideas for the future of the Flatbush African Burial Ground, a site in Flatbush where enslaved Africans were once buried.<\/p>\n<p>The event titled Brooklyn.Black.Utopia., was hosted by\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.growhousenyc.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">GrowHouse Design + Development Group<\/a>\u00a0and the<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flatbushafricanburialground.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Flatbush African Burial Ground Coalition (FABGC)<\/a>, two organizations who prevented a once-planned affordable housing development\u00a0from being built on the former burial ground, located on the corner of Bedford and Church Avenues. Since October 2022, the site has been under the control of city\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nycgovparks.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of\u00a0Parks &amp; Recreation<\/a>, which plans to build a memorial park on the land.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve been given the privilege by the ancestors for this to be in my portfolio,\u201d said Council Member Rita Joseph, who spoke during Saturday&#8217;s event.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph\u00a0announced her intention to include information about the burial ground in the city\u2019s new Black studies\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2024\/02\/29\/nyc-launches-hidden-voices-african-diaspora-curriculum\/\" rel=\"noopener\">curriculum\u00a0<\/a>in public schools. \u201cThis is a long time coming. We have a lot of challenges, but we will continue to work through them together,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3733139\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/featured-news\/img_2680.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"img_2680\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Council member Rita Joseph speaks at a community engagement event for the Flatbush African Burial Ground. Photo: Christopher Edwards\u00a0<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The architect for the project, Emmanuel Thingue, presented several design concepts for the park. One concept includes a homage to the Middle Passage, where enslaved Africans were brought to the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see it more as a place of celebration of the ancestors,\u201d said Thingue, who retired from the Parks Department just after taking on the project and is working on it pro-bono. \u201cRather than make it something to just be looked at, it becomes more like something that the descendants, the people that are here, can be involved in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One attendee asked if the park would be functional to the community and able to host events, while another raised the possibility of growing food on the land. There was also the question of whether a Black contractor should be prioritized for the park\u2019s construction.<\/p>\n<p>Alexandra McDougal, a graduate student at Columbia University, expressed concern that the advocacy of local groups may be forgotten and suggested signs be placed around the park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community of Flatbush is changing rapidly, so I wouldn\u2019t want people in five years to forget that this was a largely Black and brown led effort,&#8221;\u00a0said McDougal.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3733141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/featured-news\/img_2693.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"img_2693\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flatbush residents take a look at some options for the burial ground. Photo: Christopher Edwards\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>The possibility of finding and reinterring remains is also being taken into consideration. GrowHouse has secured a grant from the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/wennergren.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Wenner-Gren\u00a0Foundation<\/a>\u00a0to conduct a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey in September, with the hopes of finding further evidence of the site\u2019s history as a burial ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it provides more conclusive evidence or not, it does provide the community the opportunity to be directly involved,\u201d said Kelly Britt, a professor of Archeology at Brooklyn College who helped secure the grant. \u201cThis is what they wanted. They want to know if you can figure out if there&#8217;s anything here, and this is one way to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GrowHouse founder and FABGC member Shanna Sabio, who has been hosting educational tours about Brooklyn\u2019s slaveholding history near the site for several years, felt that the city should be doing more to reach out to the community.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3733138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/featured-news\/img_2666.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"img_2666\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GrowHouse founder Shanna Sabio, with microphone, speaks at a community engagement event for the Flatbush African Burial Ground. Photo: Christopher Edwards\u00a0<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe government has a responsibility to partner with us instead of us consistently pushing the envelope with no financial support and then being expected to do the work that they should be doing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s event included activities such as mediation, reiki and self-defense demonstrations. A public art project was also unveiled, showcasing art inspired by the burial ground\u00a0and designed by local youth. They are printed on aluminum signage and line Church Avenue from the burial ground to Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park.<\/p>\n<p>The Parks Department has\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nycgovparks.org\/planning-and-building\/capital-project-tracker\/project\/10496\" rel=\"noopener\">committed<\/a>\u00a0to a $4 million budget for the project, but has no set timeline for construction or completion as they are in the early stages of design.
