For residents of Canarsie and surrounding Southeast Brooklyn communities, Assemblymember Jaime Williams (Democrat) is one of the elected officials representing the neighborhood in Albany and advocating on issues impacting homeowners, renters, seniors, transportation, affordability, and quality of life.<\/p>\n

Williams has represented New York State\u2019s 59th Assembly District since 2016. The district includes Canarsie, Flatlands, Georgetown, Bergen Beach, Mill Basin, Marine Park, Mill Island, and Gerritsen Beach.<\/p>\n

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Williams immigrated to Brooklyn as a young adult and later earned degrees from York College and Fordham University, along with certification in substance abuse counseling from Kingsborough Community College. Before entering elected office, she worked in social services and domestic violence counseling and participated in community outreach efforts throughout Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Following Superstorm Sandy, Williams worked with Catholic Charities assisting residents in Canarsie, Bergen Beach, Gerritsen Beach, and Coney Island as communities struggled to recover from the storm. She later served as Community Project Director for Brooklyn East at Catholic Charities, helping coordinate outreach programs in Brownsville, East New York, Canarsie, and Mill Basin.<\/p>\n

Supporting Homeowners and Seniors<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One of the issues Williams has focused on during her time in office has been affordability for homeowners and working families. Early in her Assembly tenure, she supported legislation aimed at fixing problems with New York\u2019s STAR property tax relief program to help eligible homeowners receive tax relief benefits more efficiently.<\/p>\n

Williams currently serves as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Real Property Taxation, where she has participated in budget hearings and discussions involving property taxes and homeowner-related issues impacting New Yorkers.<\/p>\n

She has also regularly promoted programs helping seniors and low-income residents with heating assistance and other household affordability concerns, including outreach connected to the HEAP energy assistance program.<\/p>\n

Community Programs and Neighborhood Events<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Throughout the district, Williams has participated in and supported numerous community-based initiatives including backpack giveaways, food drives, youth programs, senior workshops, disaster preparedness outreach, and public safety meetings. Her Assembly office has highlighted partnerships with schools, tenant associations, civic groups, senior centers, and local organizations throughout Southeast Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Her office has also organized and promoted seasonal events including summer programs, park activities, educational workshops, senior outreach events, and community resource initiatives.<\/p>\n

Williams has also participated in humanitarian relief efforts both locally and internationally, helping coordinate missions delivering food and medical supplies following disasters and emergencies. She is also involved with NYC\u2019s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which helps communities prepare for emergencies and disasters.<\/p>\n

Legislation and Public Policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since entering office, Williams has introduced and supported legislation tied to housing protections, taxation, public safety, consumer transparency, emergency response systems, and anti-corruption measures in government.<\/p>\n

Among legislation associated with Williams are proposals related to tenant notification requirements during property foreclosures, environmental protections, public health emergency data systems, and pension forfeiture for public officials convicted of corruption-related felonies.<\/p>\n

Representing Southeast Brooklyn in Albany<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While local city services often receive the most attention, state government decisions impact transportation, taxes, schools, housing policy, social services, and funding for neighborhood programs throughout Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

For nearly a decade, Assemblymember Jaime Williams has continued serving as the State Assembly representative for Canarsie and much of Southeast Brooklyn in Albany.<\/p>\n
