The food is excellent and the prices cheap!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7693 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-storefront-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"mitchell's storefront\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-storefront-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-storefront-600x387.jpg 600w, https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-storefront.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Named one of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #88bf36;\" href=\"http:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/guide\/best-southern-comfortsoul-food-restaurants-for-families\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Best NYC Southern Comfort Restaurants for Families<\/a>\u00a0by CBS New York, is no frills dining at its best.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Offering up a collection of simple and traditional southern dishes, Mitchell\u2019s has their own personal unique laid-back approach to dining.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">When approached over learning they had the distinction of being singled out by CBS New York, the owner\u00a0Johnsie Mitchell\u00a0was indifferent, saying\u00a0she had received\u00a0a call from a regular informing them, but seemed completely unfazed by any accolade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">One can see why they act so nonchalant; Mitchell\u2019s doesn\u2019t need press to attract business because the food speaks for itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Planting its roots in Prospect Heights in the mid-1970s\u00a0James &#8220;JB&#8221; Bromell (the\u00a0waiter who also doubles as a cook)\u00a0detailed Mitchells beginnings as\u00a0a short order grill with such offerings a newspapers, eggs, hamburgers and sandwiches. It wasn\u2019t until 1978 JB said that chef and owner\u00a0Johnsie Mitchell expanded to a full-fledged restaurant offering her own approach to traditional and delicious rich southern favorites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">The storefront is tiny (five tables, three stools), and the staff small.\u00a0But even with their minute idiosyncrasies (cash only, nearly non-existent attention to diners, unavailable bathroom, etc.), their food makes it worth a stop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">The main dishes are made to order, so be prepared to wait. Specialties of the house include their signature fried chicken, fried catfish, smothered chicken dinners, chitterlings, braised oxtails and intensely flavorful\u00a0macaroni and cheese,\u00a0black eyed peas, and\u00a0collard greens.<a href=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-plate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7694 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-plate-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"mitchell's plate\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-plate-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/mitchells-plate.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">The prices are incredibly affordable: sandwiches range from $4 to $6, sides are $3, and dinners, which includes two sides and corn bread range from $7 to $11.50.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Mitchell\u2019s decor is a throwback to (a variety of) earlier times with a pre-war tin ceiling, reclaimed Burger King tables, and chandeliers. Decorated with abstract and impressionist Southern paintings depicting various dining and musical scenes, the only thing that seems to have changed since the 1970s is a fresh coat of paint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">You don\u2019t have to go to Harlem to get your soul food fix; Mitchell\u2019s has Prospect Heights covered.<\/p>\n<p><i style=\"color: #333333;\">Mitchell\u2019s Soul Food,\u00a0617A Vanderbilt Avenue\u00a0<\/i><i style=\"color: #333333;\">(between Bergen Street and St. Marks Avenue),\u00a0718-789-3212. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i style=\"color: #333333;\">Open Wed-Thurs. 10am-10pm, Fri. 10am-10:30pm, Sat. 12pm-10:30pm.
