It was eventually abandoned, then rediscovered in 1980. It\u2019s no longer in use today, but occasional tours are offered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Loew\u2019s Theater, 4515 New Utrecht Ave<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/theater.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6395 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/theater-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"theater\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It first opened in 1927 and quickly fell into disuse. Today, it functions as a furniture storehouse, although the theater is still intact. It was originally designed to resemble an Italian garden at night. It\u2019s closed to the public, but the current owners generally allow explorers in for brief periods \u2013 so ask nicely!<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Masstransiscope, Q train<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3IwVD5efXz0\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3IwVD5efXz0<\/a> \u00a0 In the tunnel leading from the DeKalb Station to Manhattan Bridge is Masstransiscope, a series of 208 lighted panels that suddenly make the walls come alive. Based on a zeotrope, the foundation of modern film making, a series of images appear to jump to life thanks to the motion of the fast moving train. It\u2019s actually a fascinating museum and heartfelt ode to New York. A celebration of the minutia of the largest city in America. What grew from just a window display in someone&#8217;s apartment is now housed in a three-room store front a few blocks away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th St<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/cemetery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6390\" src=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/cemetery.jpg\" alt=\"cemetery\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Why would you possibly want to visit a cemetery, of all places? New York\u2019s version of P\u00e8re-Lachaise (first garden cemetery in Paris), this Victorian cemetery includes numerous marble monuments and mausoleums, winding paths and four lakes.\u00a0 The hilly topography also offers a view of the Manhattan skyline. Some of its most famous permanent residents include artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, telegraph inventor Samuel Morse, and \u201cBoss\u201d Tweed.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Mosaic House, 108 Wyckoff St<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/mosaic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6392 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/mosaic-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"mosaic\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The entire bottom half of this house, from ground to windows, is covered in tiny plastic beads, colored tile, buttons, little toys and small circular mirrors. The owner of the house is a retired plastic arts professor, so the house gives new meaning to the term &#8220;taking work home with you&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>Topsy Memorial, Coney Island Museum at 1208 Surf Ave\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/Topsy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6396 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/Topsy-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Topsy\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Showing a bit of darkness, the Topsy Memorial is a flip-book style &#8220;film&#8221; about the life of Topsy, a circus elephant in the 1900s who was electrocuted for &#8220;acting up&#8221; and attacking her brutish handlers (who reportedly prodded her with pitchforks and fed her lit cigarettes. But that&#8217;s another story). Tasked with carrying out the execution was none other than Thomas Edison himself, who at the time was in a bitter battle with George Westinghouse over the distribution of his direct current (DC) versus Westinghouse&#8217;s alternating current (AC). Edison, in an attempted smear campaign to show the public how dangerous AC was, had been electrocuting dogs, cats and livestock, but jumped at the opportunity to take down Topsy, a well-known performer, in hopes of larger attention.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong>58 Joralemon St<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/joralemonst.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6391 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/08\/joralemonst-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"joralemonst\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This house may look like nothing special, but it is. The two houses on either side (56 &amp; 60) have white-trimmed windows, flower boxes and that homey lived-in feel. But 58? That\u2019s the secret. If you look carefully the basement is covered by a steel shield, the wall of &#8220;brick&#8221; is actually faux, and &#8211; the real tell &#8211; the windows are fake. So what lives behind this fa\u00e7ade? It&#8217;s a hidden subway evacuation tunnel constructed by the MTA.
