North Brooklyn is set to see a significant boost in maternal and newborn health as the New York City Council<\/a> allocates $5.8 million to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for upgrades to its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and maternity areas. This support includes a recently approved $2 million in the City\u2019s FY 2026 budget\u2014thanks to Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Council Member Sandy Nurse\u2014moving the hospital\u2019s transformation plans forward.<\/p>\n

The funds will help expand Wyckoff’s NICU and further renew its 11th-floor Maternity\/Postpartum and 12th-floor Labor & Delivery units, reinforcing the hospital\u2019s standing as a key care provider for Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Upgraded NICU Focused on Family-Centered Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The renovated NICU will be 5,000 square feet, housing 15 incubators, three nursery spaces (including an isolation room), and amenities like a breastfeeding room, family lounge, updated nurses\u2019 stations, staff areas, utility and storage rooms, plus enhanced corridors to support clinical teams.<\/p>\n

Wyckoff Heights Medical Center previously received $3.8 million in capital funding in FY 2024 and FY 2025 for phases one and two. This new investment allows the hospital to finish renovations, fully modernizing its newborn care infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Tackling Maternal Health Disparities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Speaker Adrienne Adams<\/strong> affirmed the Council\u2019s dedication to maternal health, noting the funds\u2019 vital role in overcoming inequities.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur City Council, with its proud diversity and women-led majority, remains committed to advancing maternal health and tackling persistent disparities for our mothers and families,\u201d Adams stated. She highlighted the $2 million allocated for the NICU and $5.8 million total for Wyckoff, emphasizing the importance of supporting safety-net hospitals for underserved communities.<\/p>\n

Council Member Sandy Nurse<\/strong> added that the investment is timely, especially as Black and Brown women continue to face inequitable maternal outcomes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to share that we\u2019ve secured $5.8 million for these initiatives across the past two years,\u201d Nurse said, calling Wyckoff a foundational health hub in Bushwick. \u201cEvery mother at Wyckoff should feel confident in receiving safe, dignified maternity care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investing in Community Wellness<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Council Member Jennifer Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong> highlighted the ripple effects of such hospital investments.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy upgrading facilities, we\u2019re reinforcing the health of the whole community,\u201d Guti\u00e9rrez said. Modern neonatal and maternity spaces mean \u201csafer births, swifter emergency response, and reassurance for families throughout Bushwick and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

CEO and President Vali Gache added that the improvements will enhance patient experiences and staff working environments.<\/p>\n

“Our new NICU and maternity suites will provide brighter, more efficient, and more patient-focused spaces for our care teams to excel,” Gache commented, sharing her own story of giving birth in a safety-net hospital and the ongoing importance of local healthcare access.<\/p>\n
