Inside the venue, there was a sense of shock and disbelief that hung in the air. Photo: Supplied\/Brooklyn Academy Of Music, Edwina Hay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jamila Woods a poet, songwriter\u00a0and performing artist from the South Side of Chicago, whose influences include James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni\u00a0and Sonia Sanchez, was bathed in sultry purple lighting and backed by a quartet of musicians as she soulfully sang songs from her discography. <em>Bugs<\/em>, a song from her album <em>Water Made Us<\/em>, was a highlight, which blends\u00a0her soulful vocals with poetry.<\/p>\n<p>She also performed <em>SULA (Paperback)<\/em> a 2020 single based on Toni Morrison\u2019s 1974 novel of the same name, that honors both the author and her literary characters.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago artist Tasha Viets-VanLear, singularly known as Tasha, stunned\u00a0in shocking blond hair while\u00a0on guitar. She was backed by a four-piece band and breezed through a setlist of songs including <em><a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WvBtjxLnDAw&amp;utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WvBtjxLnDAw\">Nina<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and <em><a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8gG6kEjL9HU&amp;utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8gG6kEjL9HU\">Michigan<\/a><\/em> that felt airy yet grounded on the large BAM Harvey stage.<\/p>\n<p><em><a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/kaysarahsera.com\/november-7-2024\/?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/kaysarahsera.com\/november-7-2024\/\">Stones In The Water<\/a><\/em>, a\u00a0night of poetry with Abdurraqib, <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/poet\/anis-mojgani?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/poet\/anis-mojgani\">Anis Mojgani<\/a>, <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clintsmithiii.com\/?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.clintsmithiii.com\/\">Clint Smith<\/a>\u00a0and <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/kaysarahsera.com\/?utm_source=bkreader&amp;utm_campaign=bkreader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/kaysarahsera.com\/\">Sarah Kay<\/a>\u00a0on Nov.\u00a07, was like a gathering in a friend&#8217;s basement. The poets&#8217; banter with the audience and each other highlighted a connective fiber developed from previous shows and some of the poets&#8217;\u00a0Midwerstern\u00a0upbringing.<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s well-traveled terrain of fatherhood brought laughter and applause, with a performance that was a hybrid of poetry reading and stand-up comedy. Photo: Supplied\/Brooklyn Academy Of Music, Marc J Franklin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mojgani, the 10th\u00a0poet laureate of Oregon, spoke in a high-register voice that felt sincere when he read <em>To The Sea<\/em>,\u00a0a poem\u00a0centered\u00a0on humanness and the curious nature of how people cherish what we dislike about ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Poet June Jordan\u2019s work was the animal spirit for the curation, with the series taking the name of her 2005 posthumously published poem. Her legacy of resilience was embraced by a cross-generational constellation of artists that came together across lines of race, class, gender, age\u00a0and geography.<\/p>\n<p>The co-star of any live performance at BAM Harvey Theater is the stage itself. Its expansive minimalistic measure of exposed masonry, deconstruction and timeless ruin is a power-packed visual.
