By nightfall, Donald J. Trump had surged to victory, becoming the 47th President of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The economy, the Israel-Hamas war, immigration and women\u2019s rights were top concerns for voters and had a polarizing effect in Brooklyn on an otherwise quiet general election day. Voter divisions were evident in several<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkreader.com\/policy-government\/election-results-trump-back-in-the-white-house-south-brooklyn-tilts-red-nyc-voters-pass-prop-1-9766975\"> tight races<\/a> in the borough, but it was clear that south Brooklyn had tilted red.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday said he will work with the incoming administration and communicate the need for federal funds for city education, housing, health and infrastructure projects and services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter who is in office, the city will always stand up for women, our immigrant brothers and sisters, our LGBTQ+ community and millions of others,\u201d Adams said at a late morning press conference.<\/p>\n<p>One concern\u00a0includes if, how and when Trump would implement his plan to deport undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>The city will wait and take a step back to see what will come in the next few months before advising immigrants, said Manuel Castro, the commissioner of the Mayor&#8217;s Office of Immigrant Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Castro urged immigrants to keep sending their kids to school and use emergency services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to do anything that makes people more panicked and fearful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ditmas Park resident Bill Leander, who said he voted on Sunday, the last day of early voting, said he was \u201cexcited, exhausted, all of the above.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always think the U.S. is a much better place than anywhere else in the world so I think we\u2019re going to be fine, no matter who\u2019s president,\u201d the electrician said.<\/p>\n<p>Leander, 54, said his family, who live in Brooklyn, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, were split on who they voted for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny, I know which aunt to talk to about immigration, and which one to avoid talking to about inflation,\u201d Leander said.<\/p>\n<p>In Park Slope, voters filed in and out of M.S. 51 on 5th Avenue, while children populated the nearby playground, taking advantage of the day off from public school.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3823917\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/import\/parkslopecyn.jpeg;w=960\" alt=\"parkslopecyn\" \/><figcaption>Cynthia Clark. Photo: Asar John<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhat I wanted out of this election was for everyone in this election to remember that they are deeply human,\u201d said 71-year-old Cynthia Clark, a retiree. \u201cIt just seems like there&#8217;s been a lot of hatred, denigration and separation of people when we\u2019re all humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clark said this election feels different from those prior because of what\u2019s at stake, or \u201cthe erosion of Democratic principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese [Democratic principles] are questionable at best, because our country was set up by rich powerful white men who were setting up for their own benefit of rich white men to follow,\u201d said Clark. \u201cTrump and his team are very expert at going back in history and finding these times and what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3823916\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/import\/ms51roslyn.jpeg;w=960\" alt=\"ms51roslyn\" \/><figcaption>Roslyn Beck. Photo: Asar John<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Park Slope voter Roslyn Beck said she cast her ballot for Vice President Kamala Harris because she fights for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that Trump cares about anyone but himself \u2013 he\u2019s not really hearing what people\u2019s needs are and I don\u2019t see him involving people like me,\u201d said Beck, a 63-year-old executive assistant at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3824927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/import\/alana-zeitchik(1).png;w=960\" alt=\"alana-zeitchik(1)\" \/><figcaption>Alana Zeitchik, 39 of Williamsburg, said her priority as an advocate was bringing the hostages in Gaza home. Photo: Owen Lavine<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alana Zeitchik of Williamsburg, who told BK Reader that several family members are hostages to Hamas in Gaza, said Trump will likely give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a blank check.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that after this election, we will see a recommitment overall from both here and the Israeli government to make a deal to free the hostages and stop the war in Gaza,\u201d the 39-year-old said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3824007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/import\/simon-block.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"simon-block\" \/><figcaption>Simon Block, 29 of Williamsburg, was hesitant to vote for Harris but concluded she was a &#8220;lesser of two evils.&#8221;. Photo: Owen Lavine<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Simon Block, a software engineer-by-day, comedian-by-night, said he wanted the next president to \u201ctax the wealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old from Williamsburg was also concerned about how the next president would handle women&#8217;s rights, the economy and the environment, areas in which he said Trump was \u201cunproductive to the conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3824962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/policy-government\/img_4781.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"img_4781\" \/><figcaption>Gurinder Singh, the owner of Shetty Sportswear on Flatbush Avenue. As a retailer that caters to blue collar workers, he said his business suffers when families don\u2019t have extra money for clothes and shoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government should consider giving a lot more child support credits,\u201d Singh said, who\u2019s been a small business owner for over 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>He said he noticed a dip in business from recent immigrants, as he suspects many are afraid to spend their money in fear of mass deportation.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Singh said he cared most about stable economic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a strong economy that lasts longer, through generations to include our children and grandchildren,\u201d said Singh, 47. \u201cWhat people want are jobs, money in their pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: Owen Lavine, Asar John and Kaya Laterman &nbsp; As Brooklyn residents headed to the polls on Tuesday, many voiced deep frustration with the state of the nation.
