{"id":22616,"date":"2024-10-10T09:21:13","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T13:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/multi.nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/?p=22616"},"modified":"2025-02-13T09:40:23","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T14:40:23","slug":"weeksville-heritage-centers-landmark-hunterfly-road-houses-set-for-major-renovation-to-protect-nycs-black-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/weeksville-heritage-centers-landmark-hunterfly-road-houses-set-for-major-renovation-to-protect-nycs-black-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Weeksville Heritage Center\u2019s Landmark Hunterfly Road Houses Set for Major Renovation to Protect NYC\u2019s Black History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) on Thursday announced the start of a $3.9 million restoration project for the historic Hunterfly Road Houses at the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>The project will preserve the\u00a0landmark houses, built in the 1800s, which are integral to New York City\u2019s African American history, according to a press release.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3793630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/non-profit-community\/screenshot-2024-10-09-at-130503.png;w=960\" alt=\"screenshot-2024-10-09-at-130503\" \/><figcaption>Photo: Supplied\/ NYC Department of Design and Construction<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeeksville Heritage Center tells such an important story in our city&#8217;s history and preserves the legacy of Black talent and community that have been so integral to the fabric of New York across generations,&#8221; said Cultural Affairs Commissioner Laurie Cumbo. &#8220;We\u2019re proud to invest in this important institution and get work started on this critical renovation project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The restoration will include exterior renovations of the houses&#8217; fa\u00e7ades, windows, doors, porches and roofs. The project also includes upgrades like a climate-controlled cellar to protect historical artifacts, improved plumbing and exterior lighting.<\/p>\n<p>The Weeksville Heritage Center, the largest African American cultural institution in Brooklyn, educates the public on Weeksville, one of the largest free Black communities before the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDDC is proud to work again with the Weeksville Heritage Center to advance its educational legacy,\u201d said DDC Commissioner Thomas Foley, referring to the previous $38 million renovation of the center\u2019s Education and Arts Building in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Raymond Codrington, president and chief executive officer\u00a0of Weeksville Heritage Center, emphasized the importance of this project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These houses embody the distinct history of freedom and self-determination that the founders of Weeksville used to build this community,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The restoration is expected to be completed by spring 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) on Thursday announced the start of a $3.9 million restoration project for the historic Hunterfly Road Houses at the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn.
