This bill, co-sponsored by Brooklyn Council Member Farah Louis and Williams, would study and propose eligibility criteria for receiving reparations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legacy of slavery and systemic racism has impacted all facets of our society today, and it\u2019s important that our city recognizes and takes steps to redress these longstanding harms,\u201d said City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams in a statement after the vote.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a task force would consider creating a citywide New York City Freedom Trail and a Lower Manhattan Freedom Trail, while signage would be placed near the intersection of Wall and Pearl Streets in Manhattan to mark the site of New York&#8217;s first slave market.<\/p>\n<p>L. Joy Williams, the president of the Brooklyn NAACP, said the bills were\u00a0decades in the making.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the land we are standing on right now and in the surrounding area, people of African descent were brought to these shores and sold and trafficked and were worked to build this city,&#8221; Williams said at a press conference ahead of the City Council vote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget widget-dfp gam widget-inject widget-inject-centre\" data-id=\"930186\" data-widget=\"41\" data-per=\"40\" data-min=\"\" data-path=\"\/21842630800\/NET_Inline1\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-targeting=\"[]\" data-dim-m=\"[[300, 250], [300, 600], [300, 300], [320, 320], [336, 280], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\" data-dim-t=\"[[300, 250], [300, 300], [320, 320], [640, 480], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\" data-dim-d=\"[[300, 250], [300, 300], [320, 320], [640, 480], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\" data-size=\"[[300, 250], [300, 300], [320, 320], [640, 480], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\">\n<div class=\"slot slot-widget slot-is-empty\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21842630800\/NET_Inline1_0__container__\">People think slavery is something that is far gone, something that happened centuries ago, she said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We often forget that it is not that far removed, that my grandmother&#8217;s grandmother\u00a0was enslaved,&#8221; Williams noted.<\/p>\n<p>Louis said generations of oppression is in need of study.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Black women, in particular, continue to be disadvantaged in both public and private sectors, facing systemic inequities that hinder their progress and well-being. Addressing these compounded injustices is essential to forming a more just municipality and society,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3765478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/img_4563.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"img_4563\" \/><figcaption><em>City Council Member Crystal Hudson. Photo: Kaya Laterman\u00a0<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The harm slavery caused Black Americans continues to be felt today, Hudson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our nation\u2019s inability to properly redress such a historic wrong allows this deep injustice to continue to manifest itself in distinct, tangible ways\u2013\u2013be it the prison-industrial complex, predatory lending, redlining, or inequality in our school systems,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure figure-l\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3765480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/img_4580.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"img_4580\" \/><figcaption><em>L.
