{"id":22481,"date":"2024-09-12T09:42:42","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T13:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/multi.nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/?p=22481"},"modified":"2025-02-13T09:40:25","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T14:40:25","slug":"22481-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nycnewsnetwork.com\/brooklynbuzz\/22481-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Harris Receives Brooklyn Support, Amid Divisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By: Richard Burroughs, Moses Jeanfranois and Kaya Laterman<\/p>\n<p>Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris squared off for the first time on the debate stage Tuesday night, with a lively 90-minute exchange as the candidates <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/harris-trump-debate-election-2024-updates\" rel=\"noopener\">talked about<\/a>\u00a0the economy, race, immigration and foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>Vice President Harris started the televised debate by walking over to former President Trump\u2019s podium to shake hands, which helped set the tone for the night as she kept the energy high and controlled the narrative.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3763363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/screen-shot-2024-09-11-at-94525-am.png;w=960\" alt=\"screen-shot-2024-09-11-at-94525-am\" \/><figcaption>Donald Trump and Kamala Harris shake hands before the debate began on Sept. 10, 2024. . Photo: Kaya Laterman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Trump seemed to be on the defensive when talking about the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, health insurance and abortion rights, but made effective statements about the vice president\u2019s policy changes, especially about her position on fracking for oil.<\/p>\n<p>Harris seemed to be looking to capture the attention of moderates and conservatives when she said she would not ban fracking, a big industry in Pennsylvania where the debate took place, and that she was a gun owner.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3763931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/img_4517(1).png;w=960\" alt=\"img_4517(1)\" \/><figcaption>Donald Trump and Kamala Harris during the televised presidential debate on Sept. 10, 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most Brooklyn voters interviewed by BK Reader on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning said Harris presented herself as a candidate for the whole country, while Trump seemed like he would only represent a small segment of the public.\u00a0That said, not everyone was on board with Harris, either.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure figure-l\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3763529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/juliete-james.jpg;w=960\" alt=\"juliete-james\" \/><figcaption>Clinton Hill resident Juliete James watched the debate with friends. . Photo: Richard Burroughs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Juliete James, a 30-something school teacher and artist living in Clinton Hill, said Trump simply talked a lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach candidate had a tendency to throw each other under the bus, which is fine, but I feel like [Harris] showed more understanding of what she wants to do, and Trump was trying to deflect from his wrongdoings,\u201d James said, who added that she does not support all of the vice president&#8217;s policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least knows what she\u2019s doing and is more qualified and I feel like that was definitely displayed this evening,\u201d said James, who watched the debate with friends at a debate watch party at a restaurant in Clinton Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Midwood resident Aleksander Morozova said he remained undecided after watching about 45 minutes of the debate.<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old construction worker was not happy to hear Harris mention government handouts, referring to the vice president\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/20\/what-to-know-about-harris-affordable-housing-economic-proposals.html\" rel=\"noopener\">plan<\/a>\u00a0to give first-time homeowners $25,000 for a downpayment to purchase a home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, in this country, there\u2019s opportunity if you work hard,\u201d said Morozova. \u201cThe government doesn\u2019t need to hand out money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he finds Trump funny and amusing, but found Harris smarter. That said, Morozova said it didn\u2019t matter who was in office, a Republican or a Democrat: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t make my life that different.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget widget-dfp gam widget-inject widget-inject-centre\" data-id=\"930186\" data-widget=\"41\" data-per=\"40\" data-min=\"\" data-path=\"\/21842630800\/NET_Inline1\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-targeting=\"[]\" data-dim-m=\"[[300, 250], [300, 600], [300, 300], [320, 320], [336, 280], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\" data-dim-t=\"[[300, 250], [300, 300], [320, 320], [640, 480], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\" data-dim-d=\"[[300, 250], [300, 300], [320, 320], [640, 480], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\" data-size=\"[[300, 250], [300, 300], [320, 320], [640, 480], [320, 50], [360, 120], [320, 100], 'fluid']\">\n<div class=\"slot slot-widget slot-is-empty\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21842630800\/NET_Inline1_0__container__\">However, California resident Raquel Sefton, 57, thought Harris \u201ccrushed it.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think [Harris] really laid a plan and showed that she is trying to keep what&#8217;s best for Americans,\u201d said Sefton, a lawyer who watched the debate in Brooklyn on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3763542\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/dsc_0478.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"dsc_0478\" \/><figcaption>California resident Raquel Sefton (L), and a friend, thought Vice President Kamala Harris &#8220;crushed&#8221; the debate. . Photo: Moses Jeanfrancois<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leotha Bailey-Allert, a retired teacher and artist, agreed, noting that Harris seemed to understand the plight of the working- and middle-class because that\u2019s how the vice president also grew up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked that she talked about children and mothers because it\u2019s hard raising a family, especially if you have several jobs,\u201d she said, recalling the periods in her life when she worked numerous overtime shifts and at night while raising her children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like Harris is looking out for the common man, while Trump only cares about those who already have enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Windsor Terrace resident said she found it hard to follow the debate at times because of Trump&#8217;s repeated deflection tactics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just repeated his usual negative remarks and didn\u2019t stay on topic,\u201d Bailey-Allert, 82, said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, she did not agree with Trump on his plan to\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ce9z0lm48ngo\" rel=\"noopener\">deport<\/a>\u00a0illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica was built off of immigrants and foreigners,\u201d said Bailey-Allert, who immigrated from Trinidad and Tobago in the mid-1960s. \u201cHow can Trump talk about deporting people? It\u2019s terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3763543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/dsc_0482.JPG;w=960\" alt=\"dsc_0482\" \/><figcaption>Crown Heights resident Andrew Plews. . Photo: Moses Jeanfrancois\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Crown Heights resident Andrew Plews thought the vice president did much better than expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she went on the attack early and threw [Trump] off his stride, and I think she did extremely well,\u201d the 66-year-old retired journalist said.<\/p>\n<p>Reiley Johnson, a 27-year-old tattoo artist, said she didn\u2019t think \u201cthat there&#8217;s any politician a lot of people my age will ever be in love with.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure figure-r\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"file-3763533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/bkreader\/images\/max-bueso.jpg;w=960\" alt=\"max-bueso\" \/><figcaption>Clinton Hill resident Max Bueso. . Photo: Richard Burroughs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Johnson, a Ridgewood, Queens resident, said some of her friends, whom she chatted with online during the debate, said they didn\u2019t originally agree with\u00a0Harris and her presidency plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that watching this debate made me feel more in the corner of \u2018No, there&#8217;s far worse alternatives\u2019 for our government, our democracy,\u201d said Johnson, who was disappointed that neither candidate talked about issues her generation cares about.<\/p>\n<p>Max Bueso, the founder of a blockchain company, thought Harris stepped up and looked very presidential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe she turned the tide in this election,\u201d Bueso, 37, said. Even though the crypto community is excited to see what policies Trump could offer, the Clinton Hill resident said Harris had better policies that could help more Americans.<\/p>\n<p>While it is too soon to see how the debate will affect the minds of independent voters and those in swing states, like Georgia, Michigan and Arizona, Sefton said she was concerned about overall voter turnout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m really concerned that people feel like the government doesn&#8217;t matter, voting doesn&#8217;t matter,\u201d Sefton said. \u201cAnd I think you see the different choices you should be inspired to vote, because they\u2019re very different.
