If you were born before 2000, you’ll get the unique affection previous generations had for album covers: They weren’t just music collections but also cherished artworks.<\/p>\n

From the Beatles\u2019 1967 album, \u201cSgt Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band,\u201d to Queen\u2019s iconic 1977 album, \u201cNews of the World,\u201d to Grace Jones\u2019 eye-popping 1985 album, \u201cIsland Life,\u201d the 60s through 90s offered no shortage of graphic goodies to feast on for hours.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless you were born in the basement of an art gallery, album covers were the first bit of art that we saw in our lives,\u201d said Richard Burroughs, a Brooklyn-based DJ, writer and art curator.\u00a0 \u201cBe it Stevie Wonder\u2019s \u2018Songs in the Key of Life,\u2019 these covers were the first bit of art you experienced in your hands in a non-museum setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a DJ, Burroughs’ connection to vinyl and records has been uninterrupted, spanning pretty much his entire life, which is why, in 2011, when he began to get into art curation, he conceived \u201cCover Lover Remix,\u201d a touring group exhibition of local artists that remix their favorite album covers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis exhibit makes contemporary art accessible, because you see the work of amazing visual artists within the context of something you\u2019re familiar with,\u201d Burroughs said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that the artist loves the album. Because the music could\u2019ve been trash\u2026 but the cover could\u2019ve been all that!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2011, between his writing and DJ gigs, Burroughs has continued running the exhibit off and on, \u201cremixing\u201d the artists while touring in different cities. Most recently, the exhibit landed back in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Cover Lover Remix\u2013 The 90s Edition, is on display now, until April 29, at The Brooklyn Navy Yard\u2019s DSGN Gallery, located at 144 Flushing Avenue, Suite 1313.<\/p>\n

Exhibiting artists include\u00a0Pablo Power<\/a>\u00a0remixing \u201cTake A Look Around\u201d by Masta Ace; street artist\u00a0Savior El Mundo<\/a>\u00a0remixes \u201cReturn To The 36 Chamber\u201d by Ol\u2019Dirty Bastard; and\u00a0Voodo F\u00e8<\/a>\u00a0remixes the \u201cReady To Die\u201d album by the Notorious B.I.G.<\/p>\n

Hudson Valley-based\u00a0John Gilbert<\/a>\u00a0remixes \u201cRitual De Lo Habitual\u201d from Jane\u2019s Addiction;\u00a0Lauren Rudolph<\/a>\u00a0flips the \u201cBlood, Sugar, Sex, Magik\u201d album cover by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers; muralist\u00a0Vince Ballentine<\/a>\u00a0reimagines \u201cThe Low-End Theory,\u201d from A Tribe Called Quest;\u00a0Trine Giaever<\/a>\u00a0remixes \u201c(What\u2019s The Story) Morning Glory,\u201d by Oasis; and\u00a0artist\u00a0Lupe In\u00e8s Cari\u00f1o<\/a>, does a remix of “Las Baladas” by Hombres G.<\/p>\n

Other participating artists include\u00a0Android OI<\/a>,\u00a0Wennie Huang<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0Shawn McKinney<\/a>,\u00a0Mere<\/a>, and\u00a0M.Tooley.Parker<\/a>\u00a0who remixes \u201cLast Splash\u201d by The Breeders, and\u00a0Adam Krueger<\/a>\u00a0who reimagines Snoop Doggs\u2019 \u201cDoggy Style\u201d cover.<\/p>\n

The show is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 3:00pm-7:00pm, by appointment only. Email appointments to\u00a0coverloverremix@gmail.com<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0tyler@canvasraw.com<\/a>. And there will be an Artist Talk on Saturday, April 20th, 4:00pm-6:00pm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe show is amazing!\u201d said Burroughs. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful example of how contemporary art and pop culture come together while supporting the love of vinyl records.\u201d<\/p>\n
