NEW YORK<\/strong>\u00a0(October 17, 2017) \u2013 JIG Media<\/strong><\/a>,<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0producers of the Healthy NYC Expo Presented by ShopRite<\/strong>, have confirmed Brooklyn artist and film maker, Kota the Friend<\/strong><\/a>, to speak at the Mental Health Awareness Panel Discussion.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the deaths of major hip-hop players who have struggled with depression, Kota the Friend\u2019s Paloma Beach<\/strong> central theme discusses depression, feelings of self worth and 23 year-old guilt.<\/em> Although Mental health is often stigmatized in the black community, Kota the Friend<\/strong> navigates his way through darkness to find answers for himself and his listeners. One of his attempts to bring awareness to depression and mental health is apparent in a recent video tribute to fellow Brooklyn rap artist Capital Steez<\/strong><\/a>, who committed suicide at the age of 19. \u00a0Kota the Friend will be showing the video and providing insight during the Healthy NYC Expo.<\/p>\n

\u201cMusic is a universal language that speaks to all races, cultures, creeds, ethnicities, skin colors and economical backgrounds. In the same way, depression affects all individuals.\u00a0 I started making music as therapy for myself and ended up telling the stories of many through my own experiences. It\u2019s important to me to use my platform to bring awareness to issues affecting those with mental health issues and depression, hoping they too reach out to be heard before it\u2019s too late. I want to thank JIG, ShopRite and all those involved for providing a platform to share my art and thoughts on a subject that means a lot to me and people around the world like us– carrying around more than anyone knows<\/em>\u201d stated Kota the Friend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The idea behind the Healthy NYC Expo is to bring a complete healthy living experience to the grassroots neighborhoods in New York City. Our definition of healthy living includes mind and body. There are a lot of young people going through a silent depression, and the best way to reach them is through their music and their lifestyle. Too often large medical organizations don\u2019t know how to reach this demographic. They have data but they don\u2019t have the grassroots expertise to reach the young people where they are. After following Kota the Friend and listening to his message through his music and videos, we felt we had to reach out to see if he would like to participate. Right away he understood what this would mean to so many of his peers. His message is organic and he delivers it in a way that you can understand\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Panelists include behavioral health and mediation experts, as well as mental health experts from Kings County Hospital and Brookdale Hospital.<\/p>\n

The Healthy NYC Expo will be held Saturday November4, 2017<\/strong> at the Brooklyn Sports Club, in East New York, Brooklyn, from 10am-4pm.<\/p>\n
