What Is Your Background?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have lived in Brooklyn my entire life \u2014 Crown Heights \u2014 it used to be Bedford-Stuyvesant and now it’s Crown Heights. I\u2019ve been on St Marks and Bedford Avenue for, basically, my whole life. Before that I was on Bergen Street, which is right around the corner, so, I\u2019ve been in the same neighborhood for quite awhile. I went to school in Brooklyn. I went to P.S. 138 \u2014 P.S. 241 \u2014 I went to Jackie Robinson Jr High School. I was selected to go to John Dewey High School, which was a specialized high school at the time. John Dewey was kind of like a college, so they let you select your own classes and have free time, etc. Then, I went to City College of New York, CCNY. I was in the Urban Legal Studies Program. The great Haywood Burns was the head of that program and they integrated the practice of law into community and activism. So, that was part of my training. I went to Emory University School of Law. That\u2019s in Atlanta, Georgia. I went there because they gave me a full academic scholarship for the three years. So, they was paying and I was playing.<\/span><\/p>\n

I came back to New York. I first worked in a small firm, then I worked for 32BJ Legal Services. I was in their criminal division, so I represented union members who had criminal cases up to E felonies and, thereafter, I\u2019ve been in private practice.So, I\u2019ve been in private practice for 25 years, been practicing for 28 years. So, it\u2019s a quarter of a century having my own office. I\u2019ve been at the same location on Montague Street. I do criminal defense, \u00a0estates, \u00a0real estate, and a part of my practice is to assist the community. So, I do pro-bono cases, meaning I don\u2019t get paid, or I get like a fried chicken retainer or a blunt cake retainer. I\u2019ve been helpful to the community by giving different seminars. Like today (at the Brooklyn Diabetes Awareness Health Fair) I was very pushy about people getting their health care proxy. A lot of us need education and sometimes people only think in terms of lawyers when there are bad things that happen. But, there are a lot of good things that lawyers can do to help facilitate problems \u2014 the resolution of problems and the health care proxy is one of those things. So, I\u2019ve seen a lot of people go into the hospital or have a medical emergency and then there is no one specifically designated to make the decision as to what should happen to the person. And, it winds up in a lot of family dissension, confusion, and it\u2019s not helpful to the person that\u2019s sick. So, this is a very small document, it takes less than a minute to fill out, but it\u2019s very helpful. This is a health fair and this is part of your health, having someone designated to help make a decision if you\u2019re unable to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m also a guardian ad litem, which means I help people who are somewhat incapacitated. Either they have mental issues or they are seniors who just can\u2019t maneuver and I assist them in housing court, help them get their benefits, help them get arrears and the arrears in their rent resolved, help them get repairs in their apartments done.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2018ve been in most of the courts in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I\u2019ve argued the Court of Appeals, I have been an appellate lawyer to write appeals for people who are indigent.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I was In law school, I was an Intern with the ACLU, which is the American Civil Liberties Union, and I worked on the death penalty case for Janice Buttrum. And thank God, she\u2019s still alive. And that\u2019s based on an issue I worked on with them regarding pretrial publicity. And so, I had to document all of the pre-trial publicity to make the argument that there was excessive pretrial publicity and her case should not have been heard in the same county where the incident occurred. So, that\u2019s one of the constitutional issues that were raised, and that is the only issue that went up to the Supreme Court and was successful in getting her conviction reversed. I\u2019m happy to say I spoke to her this year and she\u2019s still alive and she\u2019s getting ready to get released on probation because her sentence was illegal in terms of her sentencing to death because she was a juvenile and you\u2019re not supposed to be able to give juveniles life imprisonment. You’re supposed to give them an opportunity to rehabilitate themselves. So, she and I are the same age. So, at the time, that case was very important to me because I saw a young person my age and they were on death row and it was a very horrible thing that occurred. However, she was a kid, and kids are very impressionable. And the adult that led her into that situation \u2014 he committed suicide. And so, there she was left. And she\u2019s still alive, and I\u2019m happy to say I was a part of that and that’s what I\u2019m doing. That\u2019s my background.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Are You Running For Civil Court Judge?\u00a0<\/strong>
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>I\u2019ve seen a change in the political climate in the country. I\u2019ve seen a number of tragedies that have occurred, and I feel, given my experience, my commitment to serving the community, and my temperament, I could make a difference. It\u2019s not my assessment that led me to run, it\u2019s other people who asked me to run. \u00a0People who\u2019ve seen me in court: court officers, stenographers, and people kept asking me: when are you going to run, how come you aren\u2019t running? And when I saw what happened in January, I decided that I could make a difference. I saw judges stand up and I believe that the judiciary should be a separate branch of the government. Politicians have their place, legislators have their place, and the judiciary has its place And the judiciary should remain impartial and separate, and not be influenced by who you know or who knows you. So, it\u2019s a place that\u2019s necessary for the continuation of our democracy, and to preserve it. And so, when I heard certain pronouncements from the executive, I was like \u2018hey, that\u2019s why we\u2019re supposed to be separate, we\u2019re supposed to base our opinions based on the facts and our understanding of the law and not based on someone\u2019s political persuasion. \u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>Are There Any Other Experiences You Have That You Feel Make You Qualified For Civil Court Judge?<\/strong>
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>Everything that I’ve done, my experiences in the court room and with the community. \u00a0And everything that I’ve seen and how I have been able to take a stance on each issue. I\u2019m not involved in politics, I\u2019m not a member of any political club or anything. Any club I\u2019m a member of or have been is the membership to the Frequent Fliers club for Jetblue. At a certain point you have to ask yourself how are you contributing to the planet, other then you going on vacation? \u2014 And I feel it\u2019s necessary. I think I\u2019m qualified. I\u2019m a very fair-minded person. I\u2019m honest. I make jokes on people all the time, and that requires a little chicanery. and I love people and I love helping people. Besides traveling, helping people makes my day worthwhile.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>How Does Voting For Civil Court Judges Affect The Average Citizen?\u00a0<\/strong>
\n<\/b>
\n<\/b>Civil Court is like the People\u2019s Court. It\u2019s like the day to day \u2014 having problems. Someone runs into your car, or you pay for a service and you don\u2019t get what you were supposed to. You go the Rent-A-Center and they rip you off, or you have a problem with your neighbor and you want to sue them. So, it covers all the cases that are under $25,000. So, it\u2019s basically \u2014 it\u2019s many things. However, they don\u2019t just keep you in Civil Court. Even though you\u2019re elected as Civil Court Judge, they take you to Criminal Court, which is anything under a felony, and I\u2019ve been in the Criminal Court for 25 years doing cases. I\u2019ve also done cases in Family Court. So, Civil Court is, basically, the People\u2019s Court where people can have their grievances adjudicated that involve money. If you have an issue with your family member, then you go to Family Court. If someone alleges that you committed a crime, then you go to Criminal Court. So, those are the lower courts. As the level of the amount of money goes up, then you go to Supreme Court. If the level of the crime is higher, then you go to Supreme Court to Supreme Criminal. So it’s basically the People\u2019s Court.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Reforms Do You Plan On Bringing To The Civil Court System?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, one of the things I think can be done is to have better signage in the courthouse. You come into the courthouse \u2014 a lot of people don\u2019t speak English and it\u2019s very hard for you to find where you\u2019re supposed to go, even for me. They change the court parts and you don’t know where you’re going. Imagine you come into the courthouse and you don’t speak the language \u00a0and you don’t know where you’re going or how to get there. So, just like in the airports \u2014 if they had signage in different languages \u2014 it would make it easier for people who have access.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, a lot of people who have cases, sometimes going to court means you’re going to lose your job. People don\u2019t show up because they have to go to work. So, I think the courts can accommodate people by having a night court. They have night court in Criminal Court but they don’t use it for people who can\u2019t come during the day. And the same way they have those cases on during the day, they can just take those cases and put it in \u2014 you know, people who don\u2019t show up or can\u2019t show up \u2014 they can put it in that courtroom that they\u2019re using and it\u2019s under-utilized and people who have their cases done in the evening \u2014 not to say that everybody can access that at night, but that would be able to help, particularly people who don’t have means, and sometimes going to court that second or third time may mean the difference between you having a job and losing your job the same way they have in have in Civil Court you have cases going on \u2014 you may lose your job. If you have the choice between losing your job so that you can keep your apartment or going to see about your apartment and you can lose your job, that’s a circular thing. So, the courts can do that to make things a little more easier.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Do You Plan On Keeping Fairness When Acting As A Civil Court Judge?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m very spiritually grounded. And that helps for me, I don\u2019t know if that helps for other people, but that helps for me, being spiritually grounded. Not necessarily just a practice of religion, but believing a higher power and trusting my instincts in terms of making decisions. I\u2019ve had a lot of different experiences in a lot of different places. I\u2019ve traveled a lot, so I have a cultural understanding of different people\u2019s cultural practices. Different people do things in different ways and that’s based on their culture. If you have an understanding and an appreciation for that, you can factor that in when you make a determination of what is the correct thing to do in that situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Are You Going To Advocate Senior Rights If You\u2019re Elected?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, you can\u2019t be an advocate for seniors when you’re a judge. You have to rule on the facts and the law and that’s what you have to do. But, I have an appreciation for the issues that seniors face. I\u2019ve worked with a lot of seniors and I\u2019m very sensitive to what their needs are. So, in terms of having additional senses, like having a guardian ad litem, I would insist on that. Having translators available for them. I believe if you had more social workers in the courthouse, that would really facilitate a lot of things. Some people have mental disabilities that are undiagnosed, and if we had someone to diagnose them earlier it may facilitate the process moving smoother. I think if we could advocate for having more social workers, that would be a tremendous aid. That\u2019s what I would be advocating for in my courtroom, to have those ancillary facilities or motives available to people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Should People Vote For You?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because I\u2019m a great person, \u00a0I love people and I have all the necessary experiences. I don\u2019t have any axes to grind. I\u2019m fair-minded. People say I\u2019m very even-tempered. I\u2019m very respectful of people, of their cultures, of their religious practices, of their gender preferences. That\u2019s why. And I\u2019ll be a fair-minded judge who exercises independent judgment for the betterment of Brooklyn. I mean I\u2019m sure other people have other things but \u2014 that\u2019s me, that\u2019s what I am. I\u2019m a Brooklyn girl and I\u2019m here to make things better.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is There Anything Else You\u2019d Like To Add?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brooklyn is a great place, and it\u2019s changing. And I think it should change to accommodate people the people who are here already, as well as those that are coming in.<\/span><\/p>\n
