So what is the best movie of all time?<\/p>\n
If you\u2019re Brooklyn Paper Radio hosts Gersh Kuntzman and Vince DiMiceli, it\u2019s \u201cThe Shawshank Redemption\u201d (or, possibly, \u201cJaws.\u201d).<\/p>\n
But if you\u2019re Cristina Cacioppo, the programmer at the new Alamo Drafthouse \u2014 which opens next week Downtown \u2014 it\u2019s something by Sylvester Stallone or even the much-mocked film, \u201cIshtar.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cStallone has an artsy side that not too many people appreciate,\u201d Cacioppo said on Brooklyn Paper Radio Thursday. \u201cAnd \u2018Ishtar\u2019 is a completely underrated movie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Oh, and she also really loves \u201cBabe: Pig in the City.\u201d Really.<\/p>\n
But under questioning from Daily News columnist Kuntzman, Cacioppo admitted that she finds the beloved Morgan Freeman-Tim Robbins prison film \u201ctoo sentimental\u201d for her taste.<\/p>\n
And that taste will soon be on display for all Brooklynites to judge, once Alamo opens its first New York City cinema, restaurant, and bar inside the City Point tower on Gold St. The seven-screen indieplex opens on Friday, Oct. 28. Cacioppo promised a mix of art house classics, new releases and, yes, plenty of weird Asian kick-boxing films.<\/p>\n
Kuntzman, of course, asked the tough questions, pulling out schedules from Alamo\u2019s other locations around the country and musing why Brooklyn\u2019s appears to be so light on new releases.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re programming for the local audience, which isn\u2019t the suburbs,\u201d Cacioppo rightfully pointed out. \u201cWe\u2019ll have something for everyone, though.\u201d<\/p>\n
That \u201csomething\u201d includes cocktails, alcoholic milkshakes, burgers and the chain\u2019s trademark \u201cchips and queso.\u201d (Kuntzman said he understood the dish\u2019s components because he speaks Spanish \u201cun poco.\u201d)<\/p>\n
Still upset about Cacioppo\u2019s \u201cShawshank\u201d snub, Kuntzman summoned three of DiMiceli\u2019s top reporters to counter the programmer\u2019s vitriol. But two of The Paper\u2019s famously millennial staffers \u2014 Lauren Gill and Max Jaeger \u2014 shocked the host when they revealed they had not even seen one of the most important films of the last 25 years. Fortunately, Julianne Cuba said she not only had seen the Frank Darabont classic, but loved it.<\/p>\n
It all went down \u2014 smoothly, I might add \u2014 in between slugs from a bottle of Virginia Black, a new whisky being sold, believe it or not, by R&B legend Drake, best known for \u201cHotline Bling.\u201d<\/p>\n
DiMiceli, Kuntzman, and Cacioppo all agreed the craft whisky was smooth, which is not surprising given that it was devised by Drake. DiMiceli preferred it with just a small ice cube.<\/p>\n
