A sick pregnant woman at the 95th Street station delayed subways in Bay Ridge this morning because she refused to get off an R train until it hit Bay Ridge Avenue. Straphangers were sympathetic with the woman’s plight but fuming with the train delays.<\/p>\n
“This woman is clearly sick, she has her kids with her, why isn’t she just going to the hospital?” said Bay Ridgite Melissa Rubino who was running late for work in lower Manhattan. “Instead she’s causing delays for hundreds of people. It’s really a weird situation.” <\/p>\n
The woman — who was aboard the Manhattan-bound train with her two young children — began to feel unwell and alerted Metropolitan Transit Authority workers at around 10:20 am, according to a worker on the scene. They pled with her to leave the train and seek medical attention, but she refused, saying she would only get off three stops away at Bay Ridge Avenue.<\/p>\n
Transit workers called emergency responders to come take the woman at 10:40 am, and moved waiting passengers into a departing train at on the other side of the platform. The more-than 20-minute ordeal did not translate into additional delays along the R line, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transit Authority claimed.<\/p>\n
Emergency responders arrived at the station at 10:43 am but were unable to find the woman, said a fire department spokesman.<\/p>\n
