Police shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at them during a botched burglary in Bensonhurst on July 11.<\/p>\n
Officers responding to a call in a home at the corner of 78th Street and Stillwell Avenue saw 39-year-old Orville Edwards of Crown Heights fleeing upstairs in the three-story house at 7:30 pm, Chief of Department James O’Neill said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The officers called for backup as Edwards jumped out a rear window, officials said. He hopped a fence and fled onto Stillwell Avenue, where he ran into a uniformed sergeant and another officer, police said.<\/p>\n
Edwards pulled a revolver, and the pair fired on him, hitting him twice, according to O’Neill.<\/p>\n
Paramedics took Edwards to Coney Island Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, the chief said.<\/p>\n
A second alleged burglar fled the house just before police arrived, witnesses told cops. <\/p>\n
None of the eight people in the apartment were injured, law enforcement sources said.<\/p>\n
The officers who discharged their weapons were evaluated, treated, and released, officials said.<\/p>\n
Police recovered a gun they believe belonged to Edwards at the scene, a police report states.<\/p>\n
