Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas Proposes 10% Self-Checkout Discount

According to her official press release on NYC Newswire, Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas has introduced Bill A11501, legislation that would require retailers to provide shoppers with a 10% discount when they use self-checkout kiosks. Representing East New York, Starrett City, Brownsville, and Canarsie, Lucas says the proposal is designed to help consumers cope with rising grocery prices while recognizing the growing role customers play in scanning, bagging, and completing their own purchases. If enacted, the measure would make New York one of the first states to establish a statewide consumer discount tied specifically to self-checkout purchases.

Lucas said the legislation is intended to deliver practical savings for working families while addressing affordability concerns affecting communities across Brooklyn and New York. “Families are paying more than ever for food, household goods and everyday necessities,” Lucas said. “At the same time, retailers are increasingly asking customers to scan, bag and process their own purchases through self-checkout. If New Yorkers are doing part of the work, they should share in the savings. That’s only fair.”
